Amsterdam Schipol 16/07/16 Dave Rose
Amsterdam Schiphol is one of my favourite
Airports for its variety of movements, and facilities for
spotters. KLM Cityhopper have recently introduced weekend
“day-return” fares from DTV, so with great flight times meaning
a 6:20am departure and leaving Schiphol at 21:20pm you can cram
lots in to the day.
It was great to see the flight 80% full and
we set of on PH-KZP for the 51 minute flight after a short slot
delay. The wind was from the south-west which means landings are
on 18R (Polderbaan) and 18C (Zwanenburgbaan) with
simultaneous arrivals, although 18R is by far the busiest. Biz
and GA land on runway 22, which is close to Schiphol Oost and
the Biz aprons. Take off runways are 24 and 18L. We arrived on
18R and after a 15 minute taxi we parked at the Cityhopper
apron, looking very busy with Fokker 70’s and Embraers. The 2
new 175’s were parked up so the “need” list started to reduce
straight away.
Once through passport control I made my way up to the Panorama Terrace to scan the visitors. Its easily reached by escalator through departures, and is free. Unfortunately the terrace is much reduced after building work, but still excellent. The area lost is to the long haul stands, but you don’t miss much with the south west runway configuration, as everything needs to depart from in front of you. The weather started off cloudy but improved during the day, with the sun coming out in the afternoon, and it was very warm all day, enabling some decent shots. KLM are renewing their fleet, and
introducing
789’s, which started to appear, along with some newer
77W’s. They are also introducing a new variation to their
scheme, with about 40% of the fleet painted
to date, although not many 737’s. Lots of summer leasing is
going on with Transavia, having 7
GOL 738’s painted in the new livery, although retaining
orange engines and winglets. TUI are also leasing 2 Miami Air
738’s which retain the Miami Air scheme along with 2 738's from
Blue Air.
One of the attractions for visiting on a
Saturday is its one of the busiest days for Freighters. A good
selection was seen, including 2 China Southern 777F’s, Cathay
Pacific 748F,
Air Bridge Cargo 748F x 2, Centurion Cargo 744F,
Silk Way 744F,
Etihad 777F,
4 Emirates 777F’s, Qatar 777F, China Cargo 777F,
China Airlines B744F, Air China 777F, Saudia 744F,
LanCargo 777F and Cargolux 744F. Not a bad haul.
After a couple of hours I picked up a hire
car from Budget. My first port of call was Schiphol Oost, to
view the Biz. Its easy to get too, just follow the perimeter
road all the way round. This also allows you to see the stuff
parked at the piers out of view from the terrace, and nestling
in one was my first A350 from Singapore, my first
Garuda 77W and my first Xiamen Airlines 788. Once at Oost it
was easy to park, being a Saturday, and it was very busy. You
can spot through some fence gaps but following the buildings to
the end gives a full apron view, with shots possible. There must
have been a FedEx conference on as there were 5 of their jets
parked.
The light was improving so I had planned
some shots at the Polderbaan. There are purpose built facilities
here, with a car park and Burger van next to the runway -

CLICK HERE. It is signposted off the N201 and this road is
joined at the western end of the airfield, and its a good 5 mile
from the terminal area. The aircraft are generally slow as they
pass the car park so I walked up the cycle path to get some
touchdown shots - Examples are here -

PH-BXO It was very busy with spotters and families out
for the day, and you can get some great shots, especially in the
afternoon. A standard lens will suffice for wide bodies here,
they are very close. Aircraft on final for 18C can be seen but
you will need a 500mm lens for shots -
CLICK HERE. Because of the sheer size of the place you will
need an SBS or FR24 to make sure you don’t miss the departures
off 24 and later they started landing on 27, but only for a few
hours as the approach is over the city centre.
I got back onto the Terrace at 5pm for a few hours before going airside. Its always worth walking the piers as something is always hiding – like this!! Then it was an on-time departure on a nearly full PH-KZK for the 53 minute flight back to DTV.
All in all, a great day out.
