I last visited Dublin over 5 years ago so thought it was time to catch up on the proceedings. Ryanair from LBA offers good timings (0635 / 1600) so I set off early from Darlington. LBA in the early morning is totally mad, with over 15 flights leaving between 6am and 8.30am, security has a line running through the terminal!! (MME I WISH!!). EI-EMJ was the chosen chariot and we departed runway 32 for the 33 minute flight across the Irish Sea. We landed on runway 28 and taxied to the Ryanair terminal on the north side, and checked in with Enterprise. Car rental is now off site and a quick transfer meant I was in the car by 7.45am.

LBA was obviously full of Jet2 etc with a few visitors.

I had checked the excellent Dublin Spotters website at - http://www.adamryanaviationphotography.com/planespotting-at-dublin-airport.html

And decided to try the holding point lay-by first. This is slightly elevated and allows landing and line up shots, albeit some of the larger aircraft can have “fence-intrusion”. I stayed here till 2pm and was kept busy with a constant stream of traffic, it’s a popular spot with the locals and obviously the spotting crew from Dublin. There are no facilities here, either refreshments or toilets.

Obviously traffic is dominated by Aer Lingus / Stobart, followed by Ryanair and Cityjet. Long haul is much busier than on my last visit, with multiple United, Delta and American movements. Westjet operate a daily service from Canada using a mix of 737S and 738s. There is also traffic from European low cost airlines such as Air Blue and NAX, along with a smattering of Biz. Ethiopian Airlines now use Dublin as a hub, mainly on USA flights, some days there are 3 movements from them.

To access the Biz and maintainance you need to drive round the perimeter to the north side to a lay-by near the cross runway threshold. Everything can be seen from here along with anything stored or WFU.

Just before my flight back to LBA I was treated to a Ryanair delivery from Boeing Field. EI-FIP arrived and taxied straight into the Ryanair hangar. A nice touch.

Once airside views can be had from the Ryanair terminal area, although photos are difficult through the tinted glass. We departed on time aboard EI-FIJ and landed on what seemed the Ark Royal 36 minutes later!!

Dublin is well worth a “day-out” and this can be done easily. If you need the Irish fleets then you will get the majority during the day, along with plenty of Ryanair movements.
