The sad and unfortunate news of the Queens
passing dominated our lives last week, and the planned funeral
created lots of invitations for heads of state and dignitaries
across the globe to attend. Plans were made at the very last
minute, with capacity issues at the London airports being of
particular concern, with dignitaries being asked to travel by
commercial airlines if possible!!
Thankfully this request fell on deaf ears,
and towards the end of the week it became clear that Stansted
would be the main hub, with Luton, Farnborough, Northolt and
Gatwick all playing a part. A “very” late decision to blast
south on Monday was taken on Sunday afternoon, and Ian drove to
Darlington at 06:45, having only arriving home from a weekend in
Paris late on Sunday evening.
Most of the participants arrived over the
weekend, and stories were circulating about the considerable
Police presence encouraging spotters to stay away, so we set off
hoping for the best.
Roads were very quiet, and we arrived at
Stansted at 10:15 heading for the Ash Pub. Parking was very
busy, but we found a space in the pub car park, and proceeded
down the “Ash Pub track” which brings you to the fence line
overlooking the northern apron. Credit to the very friendly
Police here, and there were plenty of them!!
We stayed here about an hour, getting some
decent shots, although some were parked too close together. We
then walked to the western end of Belmer road, watching
movements for another hour or so. Stansted is obviously
dominated by Ryanair, but to help the variety there were 2 Qatar
B77L freighter’s, Asiana B744F, Play A20N, 2 Pegasus A20N,
Anadolujet B38M, China Southern B77F and lots of corporate
visitors.
We couldn’t see some of the funeral
visitor’s so ventured south-side in the nooks and cranny’s to
try and identify them. Some of the roads were closed, but we
managed to see everything, with a bit of patience. The stuff is
listed below, and the highlight’s were the Korean Government
B748, Namibian Government Falcon 7X, Senegal Government A320 and
2 Australian Air Force A330 MRTT’s.
Luton was next on the agenda, so down the
M11, M25 and M1 and we were there in 45 minutes. All of the
funeral visitor’s could be seen from the long stay car park (1
hour free) so we managed a few shots before parking in the
Mid-stay car park opposite the Holiday Inn Express. This allowed
a good walk along the fence and some decent shots around the
Signature complex.
Highlights here were the Turkmenistan
Challenger, Pakistan Air Force Gulf 4, Serbian Government E135
and Malaysian Government A319. Luton was busy with normal
corporate stuff as well.
On the drive north, I mentioned that the
Formula 1 Bae146 had been retired at Cranfield, so called in for
a shot. A surprise visitor had recently arrived, Falcon 6X
prototype F-WIDE which was there for wet runway trials. G-OFOM
was parked, but not in a shooting position unfortunately.
Finally, East Midlands was an hour north.
The Airborne Colours paintshop has been busy recently with a
B738 freighter awaiting delivery to Bluebird Nordic, an A320 for
Air Blue and a B737 ready for Bahamasair. Waiting treatment were
an ex Ural Airlines A321 freighter.
A great day out, with 540 miles covered.
