Naples 15 - 22 June 2022   Dave Anderson

Our first trip abroad since lockdown was a business/pleasure trip to Sorrento, flying in and out of Naples. Departure was an early morning flight from Leeds Bradford with Jet2, having seen the horror stories about Leeds I covered as many bases as I could before departure. Jet2 offer a bag drop for morning flights dropping them off between 4pm and 8pm the night before, with a local hotel booked this was a breeze. Next morning I’d paid for fast track security, £5 each well spent, from arriving at the car park to being inside the Yorkshire lounge was 25 minutes, some passengers on our flight had to wait over 3 hours!! Leeds Bradford Airport is still a disaster for anyone flying out on a morning without prior bag drop or fast track security the long wait not expected to end anytime soon. Our flight was on G-GDFM Boeing 737-300, not many of these left to fly on, took 3 hours and landed in nice sunny Naples. Our stay in Sorrento was at the Hilton Sorrento Palace with a bay view room, arrivals and departures from Naples could be seen to around 300ft before touchdown, some departures could be seen from a sunbed in the pool area as and when they turned south, all of them could be seen if you wanted to get up from your sunbed every time something took off. Northbound departures from runway 24 (they were on this all week) often turned left after takeoff, circled the bay and headed north to avoid the city.
Naples has a steady flow of movements throughout the day, the usual easyJet, Ryanair and Wizz are prevalent and the number of bizz movements was a nice surprise with some 20/30 a day, highlights during the week were PP-BFB a Global 7500 and CN-LMH a Gulfstream 450.

Heading back home, the journey to the airport takes just over an hour in very busy traffic but getting through to departures was brilliant, no waiting at all and within a few minutes of arriving I was seated with a runway view. Head to gates A1-11 and B 7-15 there are around 25 chairs facing the runway and the maintenance area, nothing moving will be missed here.

Naples has a large MRO maintenance facility with a number of aircraft stored outside including an old DC-9 which I first saw at Teesside with Inex Adria in 1978 as YU-AHW.

Corporate aircraft seem to park anywhere with no dedicated FBO apron, during my few hours here a big ramp on the north side near the engine test bay, the cargo area and the main terminal apron were all used.
