Dublin  20/04/22  Dave Rose

A variety of day returns to Dublin are now available, using Ryanair and the recently formed Emerald Airlines / Aer Lingus Commuter from Newcastle or Leeds. The best day from Newcastle is Sunday with Ryanair, leaving at 0920, and arriving back at 2110, and from Leeds the flight leaves at 0640 (very early!!) and returns at 1700. Bearing in mind the security issues at airports, it would mean leaving the north east at 3am to catch the LBA flight with Ryanair.

Emerald Airlines / Aer Lingus Commuter are slightly more easy on your sleep!! they offer an 0835 departure from Leeds, returning at 1905, so I chose this flight. Departing Darlo at 5am, I entered the "Mad House" terminal at 0620. It was truly horrific, with the security line taking over an hour to negotiate, with harrassed staff dragging customers out of the line to catch flights due for departure. Only half the scanner's were in use, to handle 13 early departures, which is clearly the issue.

Ex Stobart ATR76 EI-FSL arrived about 20 minutes late, and the 50 minute flight meant I arrived on runway 28 left at 0945. On approach the new parallel runway 28R/10L can clearly be seen, and will be in use shortly. The flight was 75% full, with lots of passengers continuing onto the USA with Aer Lingus, and taking advantage of clearing US Customs in Dublin, with their bags checked through.

Emerald park remotely between the new Terminal 2 (Aer Lingus in the main) and the Ryanair terminal, so a bus ride through the stands meant I was landside in 15 minutes. The wind direction was meant to be easterly, but was very light so they were using 28L. It took about 20 minutes to walk to the spotters embankment ( spot 2 on https://www.spotterguide.net/planespotting/europe/ireland/dublin-dub-eidw/ ) and there were about 25 spotters already there. This spot is opposite the holding point for departures, and OK for arrival shots, with the fence intruding on the bigger stuff.

Traffic is brisk, with an excellent variety, albeit dominated by Aer Lingus and Ryanair. Long haul has American (B788), United (B752 x 2), Delta (A332, A333), Emirates (B77W) and Ethiopian use Dublin as a hub onwards to the USA, but very early in the morning. Biz is also quite busy, and they park northside near the maintainance area, with US registered stuff generally calling for fuel.

After a couple of hours, the wind meant a runway change, so I hiked!! to the threshold of runway 10R which took 30 minutes. This is spot 4 on the guide and next to the Blue car park. You can use their shuttle bus from/to the terminal if needed. There is a decent elevated mound here, with a large gap in the bushes, although you need FR24 to be ready for landings due to the obstructed view to the left. However, this is a great spot for departures and arrivals. I stayed till 1530, and a nice local spotter gave me a lift back to the terminal area.

I had checked on the excellent -  http://notam-ireland.blogspot.com/ which lists the maintainance aircraft, with either Aer Lingus or Dublin Aerospace, so I had a wander around the northside, which takes 15 minutes, and was rewarded with an ex Batik B738 parked outside.

Once through the security madness, terminal 2 has lots of glass, so you cant miss anything. We were bussed to EI-GPP which was parked northside, allowing some shots of the Biz whilst waiting to board. I was back in the car at 1930, following a great day out, in perfect weather. If you fancy a day in Dublin, I would go before the new runway opens, as you will then have to choose between departures, or arrivals.
