A Volcanic Disaster!

Ok, this trip wasn't as bad as the title suggests, but after a superb trip to Shrewsbury to visit RAF Shawbury & RAF Cosford, I realised there's more out there than Leeds & Newcastle, so I decided to embark on my longest day trip to date - to East Midlands. However, about half way there, after failing to find the motorway and having to use a little back-road called the M1, the news came over the radio that some Icelandic volcano which I'm not even going to attempt to spell, had erupted, and the subsequent ash cloud had parked it's dumb grey ass over the UK, meaning almost nothing was able to fly! So after two hours I arrived at EMA & logged the following:

I was surprised at the lack of Bizjets at East Midlands, thought there'd be more. The spotting spot at the crash gate near the museum is superb, one of the best I've seen, and it's not been closed off to the public as was rumoured. There's even a footpath that extends along from the gate that's been purpose-built by the airport (although reluctantly judging by the message on the signs!!). Many thanks to Dave A for the map of EMA he gave me.

Expected more lights here, thought there'd be a good few of them, especially since Sheffield City closed, I can only assume they were hangared?

The highlight of the trip!!! I went into the club house & asked if there was any particular place they allowed photos to be taken from, never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be given a hi-viz jacket & told to go wherever I liked on the airfield! "You can walk down the runways & taxiways, but if an aircraft lands or departs, stand to the side & let it pass"!!!!

I thought long & hard about calling in at Leeds/Bradford, but I was getting tired, it had been a long day, so I headed home!

Sweet F.A.

Didn't really expect anything here, just called in because it's easy to get to - or so I thought!! I won't mention about cocking up the turn off, heading back South almost as far as Dishforth before I got chance to turn around & go back!! Should have perhaps gone into AAC Dishforth as I think there was a couple of heli's on the ramp.

Hope it's been a good read!
