Dave A kindly invited me on a two day trip to Sywell Aerodrome at the start of September, I thought at the time it was perhaps a business trip and there was a spare seat going, little did I realise it was a mini version of one of our European "Jolly Boys Outings" with just the one aircraft - Arrow G-STEA, and that Sywell were hosting the annual Light Aircraft Association Rally, with us being one of over 1000 aircraft expected over the weekend! In on the trip were STEA driver Dave Breden and his next door neighbour Paul, a relatively recent PPL he's just bought a share in our other adopted aircraft G-BRDO having previously held a share in Fishburn PA-28 G-AYKW to build his hours up.
Safety was stepped up a notch due to the large scale event taking place, but on a normal day there is a rumoured fine of £5 if you're caught wearing a hi-viz on the basis that if you're stupid enough to be hit by a propeller then you probably deserve to be. This is the attitude that should be taken by all such airfields - if one can do it they all can!
We departed bang on time at 0845 with a largely uneventful flight down, almost all of the aircraft heard on the radio were going to the same place and we were expecting a battle to get in but when we arrived it wasn't so bad, with us being number two to land with no-one behind us. Once we did land, the scale of the event became instantly clear, with rows upon rows of aircraft, there must have been well over 500 there at that point and a similar number of spotters wandering amongst them. Marshallers guided us to our parking spot, which seemed to be co-ordinated by aircraft type, i.e. all of the Vans were parked together, as were all of the flex-wings, the ulralights were in another area and so on. We started by going straight for a bacon butty to kick start the day, before I broke away to complete the mammoth task of logging all of the visiting aircraft. This must have taken the better part of two hours, and as my legs were failing and I was becoming increasingly dehydrated, Dave A text me this photo:

The LAA Rally was previously the PFA Rally and thus most of the visitors are homebuilts, ultralights and other similar categories, with many weird and wonderful designs, including flying wings, and a "Cri-Cri" which is essentially a Cozy Coupe with two lawnmower engines attached. A particular delight was the real "Little Nellie" as used in 1967s "You Only Live Twice". After logging everything I returned to the group and enjoyed a well earned drink, before we all went browsing around the various stalls, with Dave B buying a 8.33KHz bluetooth radio from the Icom stand as a back-up should G-STEAs built-in radio ever fail. The stand was manned by Icoms Head of UK Sales and we enjoyed a bit of banter with the guy and he told us that the Japanese Icom translates to Gucci in English, and he then proceeded to give us all a "Gucci" bag each, filled with a mug, pens, keyring, flask and USB drive! Little did we know that our paths would cross again later that day...more on that further down the report! We ended the afternoon by purching on a bit of grass near the main taxiway to watch the arrivals and departures. There was supposed to be an air display, and sure enough the resident Blades aerobatic team did take-off, but they went elsewhere and no display of any kind was forthcoming. A lot of arrivals over the course of the day went begging, if I'd tried to nail them all the enjoyment would have gone, by the end of the day there had been a total of 832 arrivals!!!

I should have learnt my lesson from RIAT but I was badly sunburnt by this point, luckily the decision was made to go to our digs for the night, the superb Highgate House Hotel, where a fantastic three course meal was enjoyed, before heading to the bar...which I would go on to regret!
We were staying a good 20 minutes away from Sywell Aerodrome and we figured no-one associated with the event would be this far out. Towards the end of the night, we were merry and probably not far off calling it a night, when we spot the Icom guy a few tables down as he simultaneously spots us, then proceeds to buy us all a round, with him and his missus joining us, and the proceedings notching up a level or two! A great night was had with lot's of fantastic banter, and Dave A found it particularly amusing that I fell through the toilet door at one point! Not that I can remember!
The next morning, I had to skip breakfast after I saw my dinner again...three times over. Alas, such a waste of good food and Grey Goose vodka. The taxi ride back to Sywell was rough but once walking around the airfield again I started to perk up, much to my delight as I was starting to wonder if I might not manage the flight and have to get the train back instead. I wasn't well enough to do any in-depth spotting mind, I just fired off some random shots into the parking areas and pulled off what registrations I could, if I'd done the rounds like the day before I bet I could have added at least 30% on to the below log. After another quick blast around the stalls we headed back to the aircraft and made our way home, I deteriorated once more as flying whilst hungover is never a good mix, but it was manageable...that is until David flung the nose down at York Minster shouting "dakka dakka dakka" before swinging sharp right to overshoot Elvington...I was begging him to stop whilst trying desperately to keep what little contents remained in my belly in place! (The reason for the brief aerobatics was we needed to kill five minutes as Durham ATC were on a 45 minute closure, which was no drama whatsoever and certainly not the hindrance some make it out to be).
Arriving back at DTVA it was a very pleasant surprise to be greeted by two Apaches, with a third following us in! Unfortunately the VistaJet Challenger had been and gone in the time we were away as had Pipistrel VT-NBF, which ironically would have been the highlight in amongst the 1000 odd Sywell visitors!
