Amsterdam

By Chris Smith

This trip has been in the planning for many years and has taken many different forms prior to now, and is a deeply personal trip for me more so than any other. It was the Fokker 100, in British Midland 'toothpaste' livery, at our airport, that got me involved in aviation at a very young age, and consequently I feel I owe a massive debt of gratitude to that aircraft. Whilst I have been on this aircraft / livery combination before on a Teesside - Jersey flight, I was only one or two years old and therefore my memory of it is non-existant - hell it could even have been a DC-9 for all I know!! Anyway, it would take a fantastic effort to fly on a British Midland Fokker in 2016, so I had to settle for it's smaller sibling, the Fokker 70, in KLM livery...but no matter, like British Midland KLM are another iconic brand, and from a technical perspective let's be honest what's the difference aside from 30 odd seats? It's also personal from another point of view as well - the fact I was getting to fly from my local airport again, something I thought I'd done the last of with the axing of charter flights, which was a very painful prospect even if I do understand and agree with the reasons behind this.

January isn't the most appropriate month for a spotting trip of any kind, but with the Fokkers, ahem, Fokking off soon, I felt it was now or never, so I took my chances. I initially touted the trip around the usual suspects within the spotting community, but they declined either due to the aforementioned time of year and/or the cost of the trip which was not by any means cheap for less than two days. I then offered it around some old school pals, who accepted, with the intention they would head straight into the city centre and I would remain at the airport, joining them around early evening.

There was plenty of potential for disaster on the trip, be it weather, not achieveing everything we wanted in Amsterdam during the very limited time we had available to us, a lack of airframes going in the bag due to being on foot and not being able to explore spotting spots, or the risk of overrunning building works keeping the terminal viewing terrace closed past late January, but so long as I got on that Fokker 70, I could tolerate a few failures! I did wonder though if the title of this report would be "Amsterdam" or "Amster-damn it!!". In the end, everything worked out just fine.

PH-KZI Fokker 70 KLM Cityhopper My ride to Amsterdam

We landed in Harleem on runway 36L "Polderbaan" and two hours later after crossing a couple of motorways we reached the remote apron used exclusively by Cityhopper. After a short bus ride to the terminal we dumped our bags in a locker and my mates went off to the city centre whilst I purched on the Panorama Terrace for a couple of hours. The terrace is fantastic and offers views over the KLM long haul / Delta and KLM short-haul / Air France piers, with distant views over to the GA, Maintenance and Cargo aprons. You can see arrivals and departures on runways 09/27 "Buitenveldertbaan", 18L/36R "Aalsmeerbaan", 06/24 "Kaagbaan" and 04/22 "Oostbaan", bagging you around 80-85% of traffic. At 1030 I went to the Planes@Plaza shop in the terminal to check-in for the 1100 "Schiphol Behind The Scenes" tour, a coach ride around the inner airport perimeter road and briefly airside. The driver gives a running commentary in Dutch alongside a video presentation also in Dutch but with English subtitles which sods law weren't working on this occasion, luckily a Dutch woman who guessed my situation came to the rescue and translated where necessary. The tour isn't exactly catered to spotters, and I could tell the driver was mocking spotters at the famous McDonalds spot as we passed, but it gets you to areas you wouldn't otherwise be able to reach and a good few went in the bag as a result, mainly bizjets. The tour covers a helicopter site adjacent to the GA apron which sadly was empty but seems to have a good few copper choppers based, next up was the GA apron which had KLMs DC-3 on the ramp, followed by KLM operations centre, Martinair operations centre, KLMs engine test area with B772 PH-BQG going bezerk, the old Fokker buildings and hangars, KLMs engine overhaul centre, Netherlands Air Traffic Control centre, the airports fire ground, the extensive snow plough fleet, cargo area and finally the baggage processing area. Despite never being allowed off the bus, for the sake of €15 it's well worth doing. Afterwards I just headed back to the terrace for a few hours where the weather had improved significantly, I stayed till around 3pm when I was re-joined by my mates Paul and Matthew and we went to check-in at the airports Ibis Budget hotel before heading back into the city centre. Word of advice - the buses to the hotel from both the city centre and the airport are not 24 hours and the trains to the airport reduce to once per hour during the night, we learnt the hard way and despite leaving the city centre at around 2.30am it was 6am when we finally got back!!

(Apologies for the quality of some of the photos, weather and incorrect settings went against me, plus the software we use on here sucks some quality out as well)

Sunday 31st January 2016

We left the hotel at midday and headed straight for Schiphol where we dumped our bags again in lockers, I had a quick five minute log of what was in before we headed into the city for a couple of hours. We were near enough out of money by this point anyway so we were back on the Panorama Terrace by about 4pm where we stayed for about an hour, but the weather took a turn for the worse so we grabbed our bags and headed for the gate. Our gate was D06, but we headed for gate H at the opposite end, working our way back to D as I logged what I could, but it was dark and the weather was terrible so it proved hopeless. By the time we got to gate D, sleep was more favourable than aircraft and looking at Flightradar24 I missed a canny bit of high end stuff! We boarded PH-WXD which was all but full at 75 pax, compared with just 26 outbound. Interestingly, it was nice to see a large group of Geordies favouring our flight and airport due to simplicity and ease of use!! Sadly, the same group were loud and lewd, and the look on the other passengers faces as well as those of the crew said it all...still, I can't imagine there aren't plenty of Teessiders who display similar behaviour on Newcastle's flights!

On landing back at DTVA, KLM still announce "Welcome to Teesside Airport" - come on it's been twelve years for crying out loud, I want Teesside Airport back just as much as the next person but given DTVA have bent over backwards for KLM during the last 18 months or so it wouldn't hurt for them to show a little support of their own in return! Couldn't see PA32 divert G-OEVA in the dark and didn't need it so didn't go searching. The Duke was nice mind!
