Malaga 28/9/13 - 5/10/13 Dave Rose
A weeks break on the Costa del Sol was booked, non-spotting as usual, but with "options". Newcastle was very busy on departure, the AN74 UR-CKC was parked remotely and lots of Biz were parked south-side. The flight down to Malaga was courtesy of A319 G-EZIM, taking 3 hours. On arrival I picked up the car and we were off to the 4 star Sunset Beach club in Benalmadena.

Malaga Airport has developed since my last visit, its now the 4th busiest in Spain after Madrid, Barcelona and Palma. They have built a sort of parallel runway to the east, although it doesnt seem to be used. There is also a new terminal, called T3. The Biz parking is now in the south-east near the museum, it has its own terminal as Biz are busy here.
Our complex was on the coast about 5 miles south of the airport, the pool area faced the sea and all departures/arrivals can be seen. Free WiFi meant FR24 was ticking away all the time I was round the pool, departures off 13 usually mean a right turn after 3,000ft straight over the complex, sometimes a left turn was allowed but the terrain is up to 7,000ft to the north east. Arrivals onto 31 meant descending over the complex before turning base onto the ILS, so very handy indeed. The added bonus was the quite busy airways following the coast, the main traffic being into Morocco and the Canaries.

After an overnight stay in Seville I called in at Jerez on the return, a small regional airport with a big UK flying school, that was it.

I managed a few hours at the airport during the afternoon, I made for the spotting area in Churriana. Its easy to find, just leave the Torremelinos - Malaga road, on entering the town turn right and the road takes you to the boundary fence, next to the military apron. There is parking and you have a view across the airport, photos being better on 31, they touch down in front of the elevated position. They were on 13 so I followed the fence to the threshold area, there are some hire car compounds and I settled on a dirt track slightly back and obtained a few decent shots. After this I drove round to the museum area, you need to drive into the terminal area and look for the GA Terminal. The museum is next to this and they have an elevated platform for viewing, how civilised!! Another area for 31 arrivals is the IKEA on the south side of the main road, apparently the car park is very good for photos, although you cannot see the airport from here.

So, it was time to return to blighty, Malaga is quite busy with the main action reserved for low cost carriers, Norwegian have 6-10 movements per day. Other things of interest are the daily RAM AT76 in the afternoon and the Iberia AT76's that fly to Melilla. Being close to Marbella there are always plenty of Biz, especially in the winter.
Terminal viewing is OK, the terminal is fully glazed once through security.
A320 G-EZTY brought us home in 3 hours, it was clearer so managed a few shots, one being "Cuidad Real" which is the spanish white elephant, built for no traffic in the middle of no-where!!
