When the sun shines the thought of travel is often on the mind, Dave Breden owner of resident Piper Arrow fancied a trip out, with duty free fuel (nearly 70p a litre cheaper than Teesside) and just over two hours away Jersey was an ideal location and it was somewhere Colin and I had never been before. Plans were made to leave on Saturday afternoon have a nice evening in St Helier then a day out around Jersey on Sunday returning home that evening. With the Arrow fuelled up, flight plan filed and I pad's loaded with the route we departed Teesside at 1350 heading South at 4000ft. Our route took us just East of Leeds on a direct track to the EMW beacon West of East Midlands airport, on down to Coventry and Brize Norton where we had a great view of the RAF airfield as we passed abeam, an Atlas 747 stood out on the apron along with RAF C130's, L1011's, C17's A330's, civil Boeing 767 and a short Skyvan.Time to get the life jackets on for our trip over the water as we approached Southampton and coasting out over the Needles on the Isle of Wight, we soon lost sight of land on the 30 minute crossing but were never too far from a ship on what looked like a very calm sea, should anything have gone wrong. Our approach into Jersey was onto runway 09, after a couple of orbits to wait for a Flybe Dash 8 we landed at 1617, light aircraft park on the Eastern side of the airport just near the threshold of runway 27. After minimal paperwork 1st task was a cool beer on the outside balcony of the cafe which gives great views of the taxiway and runway, shortly after Flybe E170 G-FBJG arrived late from Teesside. On Sunday after a leisurely breakfast we hired a car and toured the island, anyone who has hired a car will know what a pain the paperwork is the options, fuel, insurance etc etc are, well not AVIS in Jersey, after negotiating the day rate for a Ford Fiesta down from £65 to £40 the car was brought from the airport to our hotel in St Helier within 20 minutes, two signatures and there was the keys, "don't worry about fuel just drop it off at the airport when you're done" what a breath of fresh air. Stopping for lunch and ice cream in glorious weather we arrived back at the airport around 2pm. The airport had a steady flow of movements with a mix of light aircraft, bizz jets and airliners, viewing is easy from the cafe and a ride around the terminal and Aviation Beauport corporate hangars you shouldn't miss anything parked outside. There looks to be a parking area to the North of the runway where a number of cars were parked giving views over the whole airfield. Our trip home was a reverse of our journey down landing back at Teesside at 1900 a great weekend away.
