Monarch Airlines 4th Enthusiast Event - Milan Malpensa Airport (by Chris Smith & Stuart Reid)

On average every three months or so, Monarch Airlines hold an Enthusiasts Day, although this one was over two days. I attended their 2nd one back in December, but the bank account refused me permission for the 3rd and balked at this one, but I overruled it.

When I received word from Monarch regarding the event, I e-mailed around the usual suspects and Stuart Reid booked up.

Also in attendance on this event was Tony Dixon, Editor of Airliner World magazine, this felt like being in the presence of an aviation celebrity!! Expect a full report in the October edition.

There wasn't much to be seen at Manchester other than the usual charter stuff, so we didn't make much effort to log anything other than what could be seen and read off in the immediate vicinity. So it was just straight through security, a quick pint, then onto Airbus A321 G-OZBO.

On arrival in Milan the first thing we see is six bastard easyJets!! We since learned Malpensa is their largest non-UK base and they even have their very own terminal! They are probably the largest carrier at Malpensa, meaning we'd forked out £150 to visit an easyJet base!!!! Never mind, there was still way more than enough to keep us interested!!

Upon arrival at Milan we were given Ando / Rosey-style luxury since we were in the Sheraton hotel!!! I couldn't believe it when I got to the room, I'd never experienced luxury like it! A Minibar being the highlight! I could quite easily of sacked aviation off and just stayed in the room! Anyway, once checked-in the rest of the day was our own, I'd toyed with the idea of getting a hire car and heading to either Linate and / or Bergamo, but deemed it unfeasible so we got the free bus from terminal one to terminal two and walked back to terminal one logging and photographing anything that moved, as well as several things that didn't. During this time G-MRJK arrived from Gatwick with the other half of our group on board.

Day two started with a very nice Continental breakfast before checking out and going for our airside passes. We then toured the VIP room and underground baggage systems. We were running late at this point so a visit to the security and ops areas were given a miss and we made our way out onto the ramp to wait for a bus that would take us around the airport. Following the airside tour, the bus dropped us off near the ATC Tower, which was our next port of call, we were first given a briefing by a controller on what they do and how they do it, before taking the lift up to the tower itself. After another talk in the tower, we went out onto the balcony where we got some superb shots, the controllers even changed runways for us so we could get better departure shots!! This caused no end of problems though as they were departing into arriving traffic so it wasn't long before a lengthy que formed!!

The final visit of the day was the relatively-new Volandia museum. They only open on weekends and had opened the facility up especially for us, so we started with lunch and refreshments in their cafe. I'm not usually one for museum's but this was something special. Opened in the mid-2000s, the museum is located in the original Caproni aircraft factory buildings and the architecture is awe-inspiring. If anyone reading this has ever done the BAe Warton tour, once on the inside the layout is very similar to that facility in the sense that it's not exactly hangars, so much as a number of joining 'halls'.

They are due to be delivered several aircraft over the coming months and years and they only occupy about half of the halls at present but they intend to grow into the full facility over time. The guide who did our tour was extremely knowledgeable, leaving no stone unturned when it came to the history of the exhibits and the companies that produced them.

Upon completing the tour the heavens opened and a pretty impressive storm ensued, this saw arrivals stop and eventually departures too since aircraft cannot be refuelled during lightning storms. We started getting our hopes up that our aircraft would be diverted to Linate and thus we'd get another airport visited, but alas the storm died down and the aircraft that had been holding above started arriving (I don't think anything had diverted in the end).

Upon arriving back in Manchester we were extremely knackered with a three hour drive still ahead of us, so we didn't make a great deal of effort to log aircraft and only a handful were noted.

The end! One of the best trips I've done and although £150 is a lot of money in this day and age, it was nothing for what we got! The biggest of thank you's must go out to organiser Toby Hillier, the crew on all four Monarch flights and of course the various staff at Malpensa who couldn't have been any more welcoming and helpful! The photos above are just a selection, for even more, click on the links below. Thanks for reading if you got this far!
