Stockton’s only Sheikh “Mr. Kev Perry” was home for a week from the Middle East to co-inside with Brize Norton’s Families day on Sat 20th August, He was flying out from Heathrow on one of his “now” regular trips to the states on the Sunday morning, So I headed down south with him early on the Saturday morning to catch up with the proceedings at Brize.
The plan was to arrive at Brize about mid day, so Kev picked me up and we left Stockton about 3am on the 20th in the Chelsea Tractor hire car!!! First stop was the usual East Midlands, just arriving as the sun was rising!

East Midlands

Not a great deal in apart from the new TNT Boeing 777-200F OO-TSA and the Nimrod R1 XW664, which hasn’t made its way over to the museum yet, and is sat too near the fence to shoot without a pair of steps, “Something of which im having with me when I visit next week” So hopefully it will get worked then??

Birmingham

After East Midlands it was on to Birmingham to hopefully catch up with a couple regulars which are operating through there at the moment! Both aircraft were expected to be parked round the old terminal, “which isn’t the best for shots! so it was a big gamble as we’re both photographers and not spotters, luck would have It though, as the Air Go BAe ATP was parked well enough for a shot along with a RAF Avia Antonov AN26, the later unfortunately into the sun!

LZ-BPS BAe ATP Air Go

Kemble

Once we worked the two prop freighters at Brum it was then off to hopefully catch up with a few classics at Kemble!
We weren’t disappointed either as the ex Air Atlantique Dakota was now bare metal with Indian Air Force roundels on it, after being sold to a museum in India & a bonus being outside doing engine runs! Result!!! One aircraft that wasn’t there however was Nimrod R1 XV249, which was meant to have flown in to be dismantled for transportation by road to Cosford? Things were quiet at ASI, which only had a couple of white Airbus A320s and a Boeing 737-300. Still hanging on also was the ex DHL Airbus A300F and a Jetstar fuselage! We then headed round to shoot the two stored ex MK Cargo Airlines Boeing 747-200Fs and the BAe146s and ex Farner Fk27 Friendships, not forgetting also the immaculate Britannia, looking striking in its RAF transport colors with the sun on it!! Then round the other side to work the ex RAF Dominies, which now all have American regs on them!!

Time was getting on so we left with what we thought was a visit worth the detour!
We’d heard a rumor that Brize families day fly pasts were due to commence at 2pm and this was the main reason for the trip so we didn’t want to miss anything!

Brize Norton

Things have changed big style since the last time I was at Brize! No more tasty touch down shots of aircraft now as there’s been a 6ft fence erected round the threshold of runway 26!!! And the VC10’s have now moved near the terminal area!! No more shots of Victor Charles near the sewage works! Gutted! The area now being occupied by the Hercules from Lyneham. A bonus though, we did find a tasty place for some shots in a small industrial estate with some units, One being a two storey with stairs for the fire escape! Just nice height to get over the fence for taxi, lining up and landing shots!! A friendly guy let us use them with it being a weekend, something of which wouldn’t be possible while the gaffer was in during the week!!!
The weather wasn’t too kind nearing 2pm! dull and light rain, but not long left now for the Victor Charles, so what ever the weather, it was going to get worked! Rumours are their going to be all retired by the end of next year?? One aircraft that I thought might have been doing a fly past was one of the new RAF Airbus A330 tankers, but no sign! Plenty of time for them over the next 2 decades etc!

The following were what we got shots of, but also VC10 x4/ Tristar x2/ C-17 and half a dozen C-130J Hercules & an all white Boeing 757

ZH880 Lockheed C-130J Hercules C5 RAF
ZH871 Lockheed C-130J Hercules C4 RAF
ZH888 Lockheed C-130J Hercules C5 RAF
ZH870 Lockheed C-130J Hercules C4 RAF

ZZ174 Boeing C-17A Globemaster RAF ((Fly Past))
ZH883 C-130J Hercules RAF C5 (Fly Past))
G-DLAC Cessna 208 Caravan

So with the fly pasts over it was then onto a place where we’ve been planning to go for a while now, but never got round to it! Woodley near Reading for a classic!!

Woodley

The only Herald 100 to be preserved and a one time regular at Teesside Airport in the late seventies early eighties, G-APWA!! I remember it well on the weekend flights to Rotterdam, operated then by British Air Ferries.
So after the quick visit in the museum we then headed to Heathrow for the rest of the evening, where our hotel was!

Sun August 21st

I had an option today! Heathrow or London City before heading home on the train at 7.30pm!! So with Kev off to check in, I headed over to Macky-ds for breakfast, then on the tube to London City!! “Not being a lover of the Row” and seeing loads of boring Airbus and Boeing’s, I decided to catch up with some of British Airways/City flyer’s new Embraers at London City!!

London City

London City has some great paces to view and shoot aircraft movements, the best being late afternoon when the sun gets round specially if there using runway 28, unfortunately though, i was leaving just as the sun was getting nice and some of the better movements were due!
Directions using the DLR, rather than go to the airport station, go to Royal Albert station opposite the airport, there is a Chinese restaurant and great views across the dock along the runway! No problems were had even though security visited on a regular basis, but the female joggers kept me entertained when there was quiet spells!!
