Hungary, Austria, Slovakia and Romania 21- 23 January 2011 - Ade Hairsine

Back from my latest wanderings (Sorry it's late) and again it was back to Hungary at the start the year, On the way back from the Szolnok base tour last January we both felt we would not have to go back for quite a while as we have seen 99.9% of the aircraft in the country but it seems to get aircraft discovered in it nearly every day. Doing a bit of research on the net which lead to finding two new locations and one lost aircraft, one a new find and guy we know who was working on a base in Romania we thought we would have a trip out for 3 days and here is the result, So starting at Luton for our Wizzair flight to Budapest

Mi-8's on the range at Hajduhadhaz

MiG-15 at Jamajor

Mi-8 in Probstdorf Austria

Our ride to timisoara

MiG-23's from the air at Timisoara

And again from the air

We picked the car up and headed off towards the first call of the day in Hungary, Doing some research on the net before we set off I have found a few unknown items we wanted the look at in Hungary Hajduhadhaz was one of them and did not disappoint

Hajduhadhaz 21-01-2011

What i found on the net was a Mi-8 helicopter on a training range that has now been joined by another one from the store at Szolnok. If you look at this place on Google earth the road which runs East West near the helicopters is a public road and you are only approx 200 meters away from the aircraft

10425 Mi-8 (Ex Szolnok store)
????? Mi-8 (Old camo colours so it could have been here for quite a few years)

The next item on the list was a MiG-21 in a small town where the first Hungarian astronaut come from, Again research on the net for the true ID for this aircraft which has been confirmed by a "Guy in the know". 1980 is the year the guy went into space

Gyulahaza 21-01-2011

"1980" MiG-21 (Real id 817)

A quick nip over into Slovakia for a MiG-15 as we were in that part of the world

Kralovsky Chlmec Slovakia 21-01-2011

3010 MiG-15 (ex Czech AF)

We started back towards Budapest and the hotel we were booked in and called at two places en-route, Miskolc had two points of interest for us the airfield and an airframe in the town

Miskolc Airfield 21-01-2011

(8918) Mi-2 (c/n read 518918104 ex Hungarian AF)

This nicely confirms it's id

And off into the town for another Mi-2

Miskolc Town 21-01-2011

7834 Mi-2 ex Hungarian AF

Making good time on the road we decided to check another Mi-2 near Budapest for an id we did not check last year

Dunakeszi 21-01-2011

All we could see on our last visit here was 8924 painted near fuel filler cap so a look at the c/n plate was needed

(8942) Mi-2 (ex Slovak AF c/n 568942124 as we thought)

Again this nicely confirms another id

the hotel was reached and we settled down for the night

Day 2

An early start as per usual but not far to travel to the first target

Tokol Town 22-01-2011

The "Tokol Yard" as we call it contains a good selection of aircraft but the Mi-2 and the MiG-15 were not confirmed serials so a look in the yard was first on the list

17 MiG-21
(046) MiG-15
313 MiG-21
838 MiG-17
6115 MiG-21

94+64 Mi-2 (c/n read as 562818043 and this turns out to be an ex NVA machine nice)

And the civil bits here

HA-MCM Ka-26
HA-MPN Ka-26
HA-??? PZL-101

Very happy with our findings we set off for another of my internet researched aircraft finds

Jajmajor 22-01-2011

Sure enough on the gate at this military camp was the MiG (I am getting quite good at finding things)

711 MiG-15 (It looks like it's had a new coat of paint recently)

As we were near Kecskemet a look over the fence was next

Kecskemet 22-01-2011

Nothing new was noted just the usual MiG-29's stored in the revetments

Back on the road again for another MiG-15 but this time it was Tim who had missed out on this one 3 times before was it 4th time lucky ?

Borgond 22-01-2011

When We and my self saw this it was out on the airfield but now it's been taken in a hangar here that's how Tim has missed it

071 MiG-15

The only other aircraft of note was

HA-MDR An-2

Working our way towards Papa for a look at the C-17's here we called at a museum we looked at last year to see if anything had changed

Szantod 22-01-2011

01 MiG-23
51 MiG-21
108 Mi-24
715 Mi-24
(814) MiG-15
8913 Mi-2
9411 Mi-2

No changes , So a quick ferry ride across Lake Balaton and we were on our way to Papa. Approx 5km from Papa I saw two Ka-26's in a yard in a village, We turned round to have a look but when we got to the yard two large dogs stopped us getting out of the car to have a closer look, The ID's were taken off the net

Tapolcafo 22-01-2011

(HA-MMQ) Ka-26 Painted Yellow (c/n 7404305)
(HA-MZG / CCCP19288 Ka-26) Looked to be in Aeroflot c/s, (c/n 7101705 could be ex HUF-705 in Soviet Transport book ?)

Back on the road and to Papa

Papa 22-01-2011

Third time lucky we were hoping for C-17 "01" to be around our last one, We were not disappointed all three were in

01 C-17
02 C-17
03 C-17

As none of us needed any of the Fighters stored here we did not look at them

From here we could have had an early night at the hotel or go to look at another aircraft i have found, No contest we were on the road into Austria

Probstdorf Austria 22-01-2011

Arriving well after dark so using the car headlights it's very easy to see and we even managed a reasonable photo

(9)90 Mi-8 (ex 93+44 NVA)

Now it was time to head back to the hotel and some kip

Day 3

It was now Timisoara time, Tim the guys with us had been working on seeing the 33 stored MiG-23's here and We had put some overtime in on this as well but both of them had drawn a blank so a different approach was taken. The only way we could see the MiGs at Timisoara was to fly in, this could be done in two different way's fly in and out on a commercial flight and hope we would be sat at the correct side of the aircraft and all the MiG's could be seen or charter something our selves and make sure we could see what we wanted the latter won the day.

Tokol Airfield 23-01-2011

The arrangements had been made to charter and aircraft to fly us to Timisoara and we all met our crew and aircraft at Tokol airfield for the flight, The aircraft we used was a Piper Seneca. After the briefing and customs clearance we climbed aboard "H-CI" for the aerial assault on Timisoara, One strange thing was we sat looking backwards in the centre seats but this worked out quite good in the end for the photos we took at Timisoara not looking forward at the wing of the aircraft but looking backwards. A slight down side was when we arrived in the Timisoara area there was Snow falling and we had to use an ILS approach this also and this cut down visibility somewhat. The flight took around 1-1/4 hours each way and we ended up with good ish view of the MiG's through the snow and we got ATC clearance for 4 orbits at appx 500ft above the MiG's we then landed and stayed on the ground airside for 30 min's and took off again and got 4 more orbits. During the second set of orbits the snow had stopped and visibility was 100% better so the photo's were a lot better

(???) IAR-330 in a HAS

If you look on Google Earth at this area i will call "Area 1" the first area on the Left of the taxi way as you would come from the terminal to the Left of the GE view "Area 2" will be the four aircraft on your Left again, Then "Area 3" first on the Right as you again come from the terminal "Area 4" again on the Right "Area 5" on the Right, "Area 6" the next on the Right and "Area 7" the Six aircraft in a row behind some HAS's and "Area 7" the IAR-93. 261 (Grey c/s)
410 (Grey c/s)

I have photo's of all Grey, Dark Green Brown, Light Green and Brown so this must mean the missing aircraft is

135 Tiger c/s missing ?

Not too bad considering the conditions we were shooting in

During the back to Tokol we over flew Kecskemet airbase so I got a few ott shots of the place, and there were MiG-29's on the main ramp as well as the storage revetments, After we had got back settled up and said many thanks for our flight crew we had a look round Tokol airfield
