Reports from Madrid appeared to suggest
a good variety of visitors along with the Iberia long haul, so 4 days were
planned. Flights to Madrid with LCCs are limited so Liverpool with Easyjet
looked the best option and we were off early for a 10.25am departure. Liverpool
is not the busiest and mainly has LCCs such as Ryanair, Easy and FlyBe, after a
short ATC delay (Madrid related) we were off on A319 G-EZDP turning left off 27
towards the south. The route meant coasting out at Berry Head near Torquay then
over the Brest peninsular and Bay of Biscay to Bilbao, here our slow descent
commenced for runway 33L at Madrid, landing after 2hrs 17minutes. LCCs park on
Terminal 1 at Madrid so a quick taxi and we were on stand, it looked and was
hot!! well over 90f for the whole visit with clear blue skies of course!!
We picked up the car and had a drive
round looking for the renowned "Mound" which was found "fairly" easily using
printed off maps. We settled here for a few hours, its a good spot as nothing
much is missed. Madrid is laid out with 4 runways in use, 36L and R are at the
northern end of the field with 33L and R at the southern end. If the wind is
from the north then 33L and R are used for landing and 36L and R for departure,
arrivals split with northern, western and south western aircraft landing on 33L
and the rest on 33R. The mound is situated at the mouth of a tunnel that goes
under the airfield to the towns east of Madrid, if you don't have a car then jump
on the underground from the airport to Madrid and get off at Barajas, the mound
is about a half a mile walk from the station. Terminal 1,2 and 3 are to your
right with T4 domestic to your left with T4 International in the middle of the
field so its a good vantage point, some stuff landing on 33R and 18L can be a
challenge if it parks on the T4 International terminal but everything else comes
into view eventually.

The light gets better on the mound in
the afternoon and evening, it starts to get dark around 9pm here in August so we
stayed till 8pm as we wanted to have a look at Torrejon. Its only 20 minutes
around the motorway to the shopping centre opposite the Biz so we poled off what
we could. Reports of hassle here meant we did the job and left quickly without
poling the distant Biz parked near the military apron but we got over 20 mainly
Spanish registered stuff. Then it was back to the Holiday Inn Express for some
food and beer, the hotel is next to the 33L threshold and 49 euro per room, it
has a bar but no restaurant but arranges "take-outs" for you delivered quickly.
We planned to visit Cuatro Vientos
early on the Sunday so did a quick drive round at Madrid before setting off
around the orbital motorway. Its only a 25 minute drive to the Madrid GA field
shared with the air force. Its all nooks and crannies with planes rotting away
and in bits!! We poled off some Biz and the based Casa 212s of the air force
along with some stored Caribou and headed off to the museum only to find it
didn't open till 10am. We decided the lure of Madrid was greater so packed off to
the mound!! Light for shots is not great in the morning so after dropping Ian
and Aidan off I went in search of approach shots, again this is best in the
afternoon from our hotel car park or near cargo. After an hour they switched to
southerly arrivals so I joined the boys on the mound for the rest of the day.
Taking shots off the mound requires quick action to avoid the fences and aerials
but its OK and even though it was mega hot heat haze was at a minimum.
Traffic is brisk especially at
weekends, South American stuff from TAM, LAN, Aerosur, Aeromexico, Avianca and
Aerolineas Argentina are in every day. Iberia/ Air Nostrum are dominant along
with Air Europa, Spanair and Swiftair. Biz is quiet with most going to Torrejon,
we saw 4 over the 4 days, highlights apart from the above were the Australian AF
A330MRTT departing after a visit to Iberia and the Saudia A320s that visit
regularly. An Unusual visitor was a Delta A319 parked off T1, along way from
home!! Stored stuff is littered all round the field, mainly at Iberia
maintenance which can be reached by car and most read off, there are 6 Gulf 1s
parked around along with ex Iberia MD80s and ex Air Comet A340s.
On the Monday I dropped the boys off
and got some landing shots on 33L before spending time on the mound. I found a
footbridge over the M2 Motorway about half a mile towards Torrejon from the
hotel which is OK during the morning. Clearly its pot luck as they use both
runways for landing and you are in the middle of them. Ian and I
decided to go to Getafe during a quiet spell and got there in 20 minutes. EADS
have taken over the Casa factory for conversion of A330 tankers and 4 were
parked outside along with the A310 boom trainer. Security is tight so we didnt
hang around long before heading back to the mound for the rest of the day. On
the way back to the hotel we went to Torrejon just in time for the arrival of a
Silk Way IL76 plus a few more biz, we got some funny looks from a car load of
squadees so made a sharp exit as they were coming back along a one way system
towards us!!
Our flight home was at 5pm so we gave
back the "dirty" Micra and went airside. You can walk the entire length ot T1, 2
and 3 although shots are through glass. Cargo can be seen here with the day
stoppers of UPS 767, DHL 757 and FedEx 310 along with a stored DC8 and spanish
freighters
To summarise, Madrid is excellent for
stuff you just don't see elsewhere in Europe. Spotting is civilised and the
weather is good although May / June would require less sun screen!! The other
fields provide a change and well worth a visit if you have a car.
The log is obviously massive so I have
cut it back!!

Great for filling up your fleets!! I
now need 1 319, 1 320 and 4 340 - 300s from Iberia, they do repeat after a
couple of days.
