The first trip of the year finally got off the ground on Friday 22-01-2010 with a departure from York South for the channel tunnel and another road trip into Europe begun, This time it was off to Hungary for some long over due base visits there. The arrangements were made with the Hungarian air force for visits to Szolnok and Kescemet Air Bases. The Hungarian AF only offered two base passes to us so we took up the offer early last December and a date was set for Monday 25-01-2010 at 10-00 at the Szolnok air base gate. We had worked out a route to Hungary via here there and most other places in between as usual but the first call was Luton after looking across the Eastern cargo ramp at EMA from the M1 and saw the UPS B-767 and the Star Air B-767.

Back with day 3, We had grabbed a few hours sleep in the car in the Alps somewhere at around 800 meters up but the car was showing a temp of minus 11 by now so the engine was not turned off so we could keep warm, After the hotel "De Car" kip was finnished we made our way into Hungary for a photographic detail at Papa the base we had flown over in 2007. Most of the stored fighters have been sold and towed off the base as its now a SAC NATO C-17 transport base and no one wants the MiG's there, The MiG's are lined up on an old taxi way which is now off base but guarded. We were undisturbed taking pictures up to the point where the line of jets is broken by some veichles. This was when we disturbed the armed guard who was in is his hut up by the Su22s, He was very very unfriendly and at this point we were escourted from the area and asked to leave, We left. But first a barracks near a town and a small museum with an Papa MiG-21 for a quick photo and a Mi-8 which was not there.

Szombathley 24-01-10

(230) Mi-8

This aircraft can be seen on Google Earth but it has moved from this position as the barracks has been turned into a prison and we did not want to hang around here so we left without seeing it. The information we had got is it had moved to a closed barracks in the city, A quick look round on our return leg into Austria found nothing BUT we may have been looking at the wrong closed barracks in the city who knows ?.

Well another day done and again it was off to find a hotel for the usual food beer and kip near some C-17,s !.

The run for home day, The day started as if you had not guessed at Ramstein the hotel was about 1 mile from the base and after leaving to here we went up the hill at Kindsbach to be greeted with a very reduced view of the base by the falling snow. We decided to drive round the base and see if we could do any better that what we got on the hill. I had never had to do a fence drive here and it was all new to me but with a little persistence we managed to read off the list below, The C-130 line only contained one Herk and we could not get a good view on it so it went un-read.
