Zakynthos (Zante) 6/6/10 – 20/6/10 Aidan Williamson

This year our main fortnight’s holiday was in Tsilivsi on the island of Zakynthos (also known as Zante)
Tsilivi is on the north coast and just off the extended centreline so it is possible to log the passing aircraft on arrival or departure, although we were a bit “underneath” the flightpath for good photos.

This is by no means a full report of all movements as I had to spend extended periods “behaving normally” but managed to log the following from our hotel, and during a couple of days on the beach at Kalamaki which is more or less at the end of the runway. The busiest days appeared to be Tuesday, Friday & Sunday.

We flew from Newcastle on Thomsonfly B737-800 G-CDZM. The usual early morning collection of Eastern, Jet 2 Flybe & Easyjet were present , the new ones for me being

G-EUYD A320 BA
G-EZDF A319 Easyjet
G-EZFL A319 Easyjet
G-JECG DHC-8 Flybe

According to the captain’s pre-flight chat we routed Manchester, Heathrow, Dover, Brussels, Frankfurt but with 8/8ths cloud as far as Germany I was unable to confirm that. When the cloud cleared I was able to take a few photos of landmarks & airfields we passed, and confirmed the remainder of the route as Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Kempten, Bolzano, Pula, - UZ740-, Brindisi, Lecce, followed shortly by descent & vectors to LGZA for a visual approach to Rwy 34.

The airport has had a new, modern, terminal built fairly recently and is more than capable of handling the maximum of around 6 aircraft of up to B757 size which can be accommodated at any one time.
(A pleasant change to the tiny airport at Keffalonia which had only 3 check in desks when we were there 2 years ago).

Photos of some of the following aircraft here: Pictures

As you can see, a lot of UK operators and a lot of Eastern European operators, for whom Zakynthos is a very short haul (and obviously popular) trip.

We returned to Newcastle on B737-804 G-CDZL, Leaving 20 minutes late due to ATC restrictions over Germany, using Rwy 34 & routing Ioannina (YNN) , Tirana, Zagreb (we were told), then back across Europe ( route obscured by 8/8ths cloud from Northern Albania until crossing the Dutch coast after Spijkerboor (SPY) ).
After beginning a very long descent over the North Sea, we crossed the UK coast just south of Staithes and passed over Tees port before being vectored inland for Newcastle’s Rwy 07.

Nothing of interest noted at Newcastle , got the courtesy bus to the car park and we were home 50 minutes later.
