Germany Base Tours aka "Seaking Lynx's in Germany"  21 - 25 November 2010  Ade Hairsine

The chance of some base tours in Germany, (Two Navy, One Air Force and an Army Base) was just too much so after all the planning had been done we set off by car for the Channel Tunnel last Sunday morning, I did not bother with East Midlands but we did call in at Luton to see what was around which started the trip off nicely with two Azerbijan registered Gulfstream's

C160 Transall at Hohn

F-104 Starfighter at Kalkar Von Seydlitz Kaserne

F-104 starfighter at Putlos

Lynx at nordholz

MiG-21 at Putlos

Seaking at Kiel

Su-22 at Laage

So of down to Folkestone for the Chunnel crossing and down the now very boring E40 motorway to Brussels. Nothing military at Brussels on either side, Abalag or
Melsbroke, but it was all fogged in. We could only see on to Abalags ramp and one or two C-130's on Melsbroke in the gloom but logged anyway were

That was it for Belgium for this trip it was now on into The Netherlands and an ex NVA Mi-2

Schaijk 21-11-2010

Acting as a "Guard" on this private heli-pad is the Mi-2, it can easily be seen from the road which runs past

(94+71) Mi-2s

That done it was now into Germany for a few calls starting with a fun park called "Irrland Freizeit Park" at Twisteden. All the aircraft here can be seen from the outside bar one a civil PZL-101 said to be "SP-CET" c/n 96177, Of note to us are

Twisteden 21-11-2010

(MM583) G-22 ex Italain AF
(MM6356) G-91 ex Italian AF in "Tiger" colours
(4206) Mi-2 ex Polish AF (c/n plate checked as 544602016)

Two An-2's are alos here and they are

SP-(FMP) An-2 ex Polish AF 4723, It's fitted with the wings of SP-FIX
??-??? An-2 (the radio plaet reads "31516" which could be CCCP-31516 which would make it c/n IG199-25 more info needed here

Our next call was Weeze only 4 miles away it's one of Ryanair's hubs. I think just about everything can be read off on the ramps from the terminal area but our main interest was the small museum here holding on to the days when this was RAF Laarbruch

Weeze 21-11-2010

Museum

Only 2 Euros to get in and you will find a whole host of history on the ex RAF station photos, documents and models etc, The two Cock-pit sections are inside the museum in nice condition

(WH849)/- Canberra (Cock-pit only)
(XV337)/- Buccaneer (Cock-pit only)

Weeze Airport 21-11-2010

There were about 10 Ryanair B-737's on the ground here but only one was new ish the rest were the EI-D-- srs etc

EI-EKO B-737 Ryn

Again just a few miles up the road is a German AF barracks with two preserved air frames. The Starfighter can be seen from the outside no problem but the G-91 is a little shy to public view so an e-mail to the barracks security office the week before we set off gained us access for a quick photo or two

Kalkar Von Seydlitz Kaserne 21-11-2010

29+05 F-104
33+10 G-91

Back on the road and another Barrack or Kaserne with a Helicopter on display, The problem with this one was it was dark by the time we arrived but its very close to the un manned gate and the car headlights lit the UH-1 up nicely

Oldenburg 21-11-2010

73+70 UH-1

Hamburg was the next target for another UH-1 and a hotel for the night, The first thing was the "Chopper" this is at a military hospital we knew nothing about except the "Huey" is displayed near the heli-pad. When we arrived at the gate we found nobody around but the gates were open so we drove in to find someone to ask. The next small problem was we found the "Huey" before we found someone to ask. Hmm what to do !!, Answer = A quick photo or two and a quick departure to a hotel ending Day 1

Hamburg Wandsbek 21-11-2010

70+78 UH-1

Day 2

Day 2 started with a look at the Airbus plant at Finkenwerder for a N-2501 Noratlas, a HFB-320 Hansa Jet and some new Airbus,s

Finkenwerder 22-11-2010

A view from the gate area of the airfield saw only new Airbus's but from the North side of the river (and what a drive round that was through the rush hour traffic !) gave us a view of the Noratlas and the Hansa and a good look into some of the the A-380 hangars

(D-CARA) HFB-320 Hansa Jet
(F-GDSG/3) AS-320 Guppy

So that was that done and now heading North West away from Hamburg (And the traffic) for a GA field where some ex mil lives

Uetersen 22-11-2010

An aircraft in the museum at Rothenberg in Germany we have seen once or twice as the same serial as the the aircraft here and been of the same type and us not being able to identify it presented us with a problem so if we looked at both aircraft the problem is solved

JB+110 CL-13 Sabre (The Work Number on the tail solved a mystery this one is W/Nr 1643 and the one at Rothenburg is the other JB-110 W/Nr 1734)

The resident war birds were all locked up in their hangars and were not seen so off we went to another Kaserne

Heidi 22-11-2010

We had not contacted the barracks as we were unable to find an e-mail address but as luck would have it a very friendly guy at the gate took us in anyway so we could take some photos

(35+41) G-91 (Real ID BR-362)

Kiel Base Tour 22-11-2010

A nice little base and a good tour round. I don't think there is much of a view from the outside as one side is the sea and the other side are trees and building so getting on is the only way i think

So with darkness almost apon us a little nocturnal spotting was in order starting with a drive to the Danish border town of Flensburg for another Starfighter

Flensburg 22-11-2010

We managed just to get up to the Flensburg before it was dark and drove in to the yard of Nord Schrott scrap metal dealers and find the pole mounted "Staff"

21+25 F-104

Being so far North in Germany and you cannot really get any further North brought an idea to mind. Just over in Denmark is the town of Tonder and at the airfield is a preserved Danish AF Draken standing as a gate guard, Well we just had to

Tonder 22-11-2010

AR-102 F-35 Draken Ex Danish AF

Leaving here we drove back into Germany for a hotel in Husum

Day 3

The reason for the hotel in this town was the barracks and airfield have a few aircraft knocking around

Heading South for today's visit we had a quick look at Hohn during a Snow shower to see if anything had changed from yesterday

Hohn 23-11-2010

Just two changes but they were welcome

50+59 C-160
50+82 C-160

From here we had the choice of driving back down to Hamburg and up to Nordholz a distance of around 200 miles or take a chance we could get on the ferry that cross's Elbe river which worked out at a 45 mile drive, Not much in it then so Anchor's Away and 12 Euros later we were afloat on the ferry. It takes about 30 min's to do the crossing and cuts off 150 miles of driving so we thought it was well worth it. Arriving at Nordholz base and looking at the museum which is at the enterance we saw the Su-22, The last Su-22 in Germany we needed and the one of the last three ex NVA "Fitters" totally the others are in Italy and Spain (WE must plan a trip or two)

Nordholz Base tour 23-11-2010

We were met at the gate by our guide and got on the coach they had provided and set off to the P-3 hangar and then onto the Lynx hangar

The tour was not as good as we hoped (Not many aircraft on base and we were not allowed in the Lynx Deep Maintenance Hangar) it would be but we got in and saw a few nice aircraft inc the Atlantic that was getting broken up a big "Gap Filler" for me so i cannot complain. Our guide was very friendly and he got the guys in the hangars to explain everything we asked about. After saying good bye it was into the museum

Happy with that we departed to Poland !, The next base tour was at Laage some 256 miles away to the East BUT a MiG-21 in poland has been calling for a while and it was only another 160 miles to get it

Goleniow Poland 23-11-2010

Arriving in the town at about 21-00 that evening the MiG was soon found and photographed

9353 MiG-21 Polish AF

A hotel was found near Szczecin leaving a short hop of 150 mile to Laage the next morning

Day 4

The base at Laage only has one entrance and everyone on the tour was in the car park when we arrived 15 min's early we met up and got our names ticked on the list
as being present we met with our guide and went on base and again on a coach for the tour round. Our guide who could not have been any more helpful if he tired took us everywhere. We saw every single aircraft on base and all the preserved bits. The only thing we could not do was take photos of the Typhoons, the preserved aircraft "OK" but not the Typhoons "NO" "My boss told me no photo's" he said

Laage Base Tour 24-11-2010

The Typhoons opperate out of "Flow Throughs" or "Barns" they are like an "Up and Over" garage door these are in two areas on the base with the maintenance hangar and "Wash house" between these areas. Each "Barn" contains one Typhoon

Well it don't get better than that, every aircraft on base logged, We said good bye to out host and departed to the next location. Putlos is a live army tank firing range and again arrangements had been made for us to photograph the aircraft that are used on the range as passive targets and for other training. The other thing was there is a MiG-21 that lives on here

Putlos 24-11-2010

As usual we were met at the gate by a very friendly guide and escorted on the range. The F-104 is not with the rest, it's in some woods some 1 km or so away its used for crash rescue training the others are near the mock runway as seen on google earth
