Chasing some Swedish Classic’s 28Aug - 30th Aug Ian Ellington

Back in 2003 Kev Perry and myself headed out to Russia via Stockholm! On departure onboard our SAS MD82 we spotted some classic jetliners in the shape of three Caravelle’s!! Two in old SAS colours, while the other one was in the Le Caravelle preservation club colours “which is ex Swedish A/F.

Being an avid fan of old jet and prop transport aircraft I knew some day it had to be investigated with regards to shooting these beasts!! As luck would have it though, two have now been moved to a place central at Stockholm Arlanda Airport where I knew I could get some good shots of them both!  Having had confirmation of this in a couple of mails it was onto the www to book some flights and get the ball rolling!  So straight after work on Fri the 28th Aug it was across to Thornaby Train Station to make my way up to Newcastle Airport for the EZY flight down to Stansted!

Newcastle Fri 28th Aug

Nothing tasty apart from a Gulf 5 at Samson and a West Air Europe ATP in cargo! And G-EZDW A319 my lift!!!

London Stansted Fri 28th/Sat 29th Aug, my home for the night!!

The Ryanair flight was due to depart at 6am to Stockholm Skavsta Saturday morning so didn’t bother booking into any hotels! Just sat and edited some shots through the night!! The time soon went and wasn’t long before I was boarding EI-DWY B737-800 for the 1hr 50 minute flight to Stockholm!!  As is the case with Ryanair though, most destinations are miles from the city advertised and Stockholm city centre is no exception “being 100 kms away.

Stockholm Skavsta Saturday 29th Aug

EI-DWY B737-800

3 ex SAS DHC8-400s LN-RDA/RD? and RDT all stored and in basic SAS colours! 2 Swedish Coast Guard DHC8-300’s, which I missed on the way out as I was on the bus! There based here along with a company similar to FR Aviation who operates MU2s and Learjet 35’s. Also missed were 3 Antonov AN2’s which do parachute jumps! These aircraft were parked at the other side of the airport which I didn’t get time to get to, so went unidentified! Also missed was a couple of Cessna 208 Caravans, Anyway so after a couple of shots of the ex SAS DHC,8-400s it was onto the Ryanair bus to Arlanda.  I’d planned on getting a hire car from Skavsta Airport on a one way rental “as my flight back home was with SAS from Arlanda to Heathrow” but on looking at the prices it made more sense to use the bus’s to Stockholm Arlanda Airport via the city and get the hire car from and return it to Arlanda Airport! Much cheaper!!

After picking up the hire car it was straight round to the spotter Pavilion where the two Caravelle’s are near! Couldn’t have timed it better as the round one “sun” came out with some pretty tasty dark clouds in the background!!!  Having spent an hour working the camera on these beasts I headed off to do some investigating on where to set up shop!  A good website which gives you maps/info on a number of airports is www.PLANE-SPOTTER.com. I printed off a couple of maps and info with regards to Arlanda Airport, Glad I did as it came in real handy!!  So after a blast round the airport it was down to an excellent place near to runway 26 “which was the arrivals runway for the duration of my stay!  It seems to be a popular spot for aircraft enthusiasts and families alike and has several pallets on top of each other to help photographers get over the fence!! And is north facing!!  No problems were had with security/police as they seen me on several occasions on top of these pallets!

A Major disappointment was waiting for the Flying Carpet “a Lebanese airline” B737-200 from Beirut at 6pm to arrive, only for it to be replaced to a Viking B737-300! Gutted!!  Nothing else of interest was due so it was off to Stockholm Bromma where my hotel was for the night!

Stockholm Bromma Sunday 30th Aug

SE-CCX CV440

Once I had my breakfast it was round to try and shoot the Convair CV440! I was last at Bromma back in 1993 and shot it airside but was taking slides then so for obvious reasons wanted to get back and get some digi pics of it!!  There’s a golf course, which you have to cross to get to the perimeter fence where the CV440 is!! Unfortunately now though it has been doubled up with another fence, which was a big blow!!!! I don’t normally give up easily so started to work out how to get up to a height without getting the first fence in the shot!!  Lucky enough there was some holes in the fence where I managed to get a foot in and climb up to a point where I could get a couple of pics with just a bit of the inside fence in the bottom of the shot!!  Result!!!! Bit of an arse on shot but well worth the effort I think!!  Well! It was time now to do the terminal and get back to Arlanda for the rest of the day as time was getting on!! I knew that I would miss a lot of the commuters departing Bromma before I set off as they leave very early so wasn’t expecting to see a great deal! Only a Malmo RJ100 and a Saab SF340 were at the terminal and a couple of biz at the FBO, so headed round to maintenance and the general aviation side of the airport where I was greeted by the immaculate SAS C47 Dakota SE-CFP!! Perfectly positioned with the round one “Sun” brightening it up for a near perfect shot!! I also shot this in 1993 but it was at a distance, so to get so close in sunny conditions was a real bonus for me! With that and shooting the CV440 made up the disappointment for missing the 737-200 last night at Arlanda!

Nothing to get excited about but a couple of metro’s a Saab SF340 and a tasty Brasilia made up what was on show round at the maintenance area! The old bill pulled me but he basically said no shots towards the terminal building or this hut, which was some unmarked police station!! As is the case though! Get shots ask questions later!!! He was sound with me so after a short chat i headed back to Arlanda with what for me was a tasty visit!!

My flight back to Heathrow was at 6pm so after several hours it was round to drop the hire car off and then check in!!  The 2hr 20 min flight was onboard LN-RRO Boeing 737-600, a first for me to fly in which is why I booked that particular flight!! Great flight, clear and no turbulence and a great landing at the row!! Was made more interesting as it was a female captain!!  Dodgy bit of parking though!!! Can’t be good at everything “After all it was a female!!!!  It was then round to the Travelodge for the night as I had planned on having the Monday at Heathrow.

Well after having two glorious days and it being a bank holiday! It had to change! And it did!! The weather was awful when I looked out the window!! The visibility must have been down to 800ft!!  So just had a lie in followed by a relaxed breakfast!! The signs were good though as it was meant to clear up around midday!! With that in mind I headed to the departure runway “which was 27L” and got some line up shots until they changed at the regular 3pm slot! Then I headed to Mytle Avenue for landing shots on 27L!! There i chilled in the warm afternoon sun and spent several hours talking to a pensioner who knew the late Ian Mcfarlane!! She certainly knew her stuff as she does a lot for Air Britain and just finished the Dakota production list publication!!  She wasn’t shy in working the shutter either on the landing shots!!  Talk about getting ya finger down!!! Put me to shame!!!  Still nice to see!!

Once round to 6pm I headed off to catch my tube to kings cross and train back up north where my dad was waiting at Darlington station!!

Stockholm Arlanda is a bit quiet at times but has some nice stuff that you don’t see outside of Sweden and great places to shoot them!! But for me the sight of 4 Caravelle’s will always warrant a re-visit, hopefully next time to shoot the other two which are more awkward to get to and the Viscount 700 “if still there??
