Nellis Air Force Base Tuesday 29th July 2008

Located at the end of Las Vegas Bvd (the Strip) is Nellis, home of the red flag exercises, just happened one was taking place during our stay, so after dropping the girls off shopping Matty and I headed up to the base. The ideal spot for landing photo's is at the end of runway 03 at the end of Cheyenne Ave however with the aircraft landing at the other end the next best spot is near the speedway track, there is a gate nr 3 on the main road (left side) the locals were parked here. Aircraft that break to the right will then bank in front of you before landing, the more that arrive at once the further down the road they will bank for separation, ideally a flight of two gives the best photo's, the red flag aircraft that flew (listed below) all arrived back pretty much together some in two's some in three or fours, some good shots were taken and all aircraft can be read off. Thanks to local spotter Glen and the man with the biggest lens I have ever seen for help with some of the parked aircraft serials. Sadly F15D Eagle 85-0131/WA crashed on the Nellis range at 1130am the following day, the pilot was killed and the back seater an RAF exchange pilot was in a serious condition in hospital a photo of this aircraft on approach is in the Pics 1.

North Las Vegas Tuesday 29th July 2008

Not far from Nellis is Las Vegas North, this airfield has over 1000 light residents, many in garages and many in sun shelters, not wanting to spend much time here I wanted to get some of the Visionair Do228's, so only a few light were noted basically as seen from the car, a nice surprise in the form of a US Army special Ops Casa 235.

Las Vegas McCarran Wednesday 30th July 2008

A quick call into McCarran on the way to a little sightseeing on the strip, we called at the end of the 25 runways for a few photo's and a quick 30 minute log of the departures, there is some waste ground on the corner of Sunset and Bruce street no problem to park and easy to photograph the landings on 25 left.

Las Vegas Henderson Executive Thursday 31 July 2008

Matt and I had a visit to Edwards AFB & Mojave on Friday, the first tour was due to start at 0830am, instead of getting up too early we drove down to Barstow on Thursday evening and stayed overnight, calling en-route into Henderson Exec. another airport with loads of aircraft garages. The FBO has a small terminal here and anything parked outside could be read off ok, doesn't look  a busy place.
