Jersey/Guernsey and Aberdeen 20-23 June 2008  Ian Ellington

It’s been a couple of years now since I last visited Jersey and always thought if I went back I’d like to try a Aurigny Trislander flight to Guernsey!! So with bmi-baby knocking out cheep'ies I thought what better time to go!   Booking my flights out of Birmingham and the light nights would also be good time to shoot some cargo stuff arriving at East Mids! I’ve not been to Aberdeen either so I thought while down in Birmingham id hit the highlands for the day!!

So the plan of attack was to head off to East Mids straight after work on the Fri 20/06 and stay their until dark, But with me working over till 10pm thru night my gaffer said have the Friday off with pay!!!!!!!  YIPPPPEEEEEEEE!!!!   So after a lie in I went up to DTV mid day Fri to shoot the Airbee MD83 “only to find it being the same as last week!! EC-JUG” Anyway after wasting it and the SAS B737-7 LN-RRA and Citationjet G-HEBJ I then set off down the M1!

Birmingham Sat 21/06/2008

I dropped my car off at the Airparks “off Airport Carpark” then it was off on the shuttle bus to the airport for my flight to Jersey!  If anyone is flying out of Birmingham I would deffinatly recommend Airparks as it was only £11 for three full days and also theirs a free 24hr shuttle bus!!

Nothing of Note at Birmingham apart from the night stoppers and

G-MKSA Regional Jet

G-IRSH ERJ135 Legacy

After 50 minutes on board G-TOYE Boeing 737-300 we landed at Jersey in bright sunshine!!  So it was off to the Aero Club Balcony for the majority of the day!!   What a place it is for shots as the sun is behind you nearly all day and you’re above the fence and also the food is spot on!! They have an arrivals screen which has all the days arrivals on it including tins!!!!  So once id set up camp it was a full English!!!! a treat for 5 big ones and  Just what I needed as I knew it was going to be a hard days graft on the Camera and my right finger!!!!!

Their also was a cirrus fly in over the weekend!! Tins don’t really melt my butter “as im not really into Light” but I got took out on the ramp to shoot some of them!!  Over 50 in total!! So thanks to Dale at the aero club for the ramp tour!!

As I mentioned earlier i'd fancied a flight to Guernsey in a Trislander so I booked one way with Aurigny £22 and the return with Blue Islands on a Jetstream also £22!  In all it gave me just under 2 hours to get round Guernsey and shoot the Herald/Bandeirante in the fire training ground!! I had mailed the fire dept so they were expecting me, so when the flight was early I was well chuffed as it was going to be tight to cram everything in!!!  Special thanks goes out to the fire dept as they gave me a ramp tour after a quick visit to their training ground!!  Again I would deffinatley recommend a quick visit to Guernsey  if in Jersey! If anything just to fly in a Trislander! So it was onto G-BDTO for the hop across the water!! In the cruise at 1,000ft!!!!! only 14miniutes flight time!!! AWESOME!!!! The only problem is the boats/ships etc seem to pass you below!!!

After a quick 2 hours round the airport it was on the Blue Islands Jetstream G-PLAJ back to Jersey!!  A bit quicker and quieter than the Trislander but still awesome never the less!!! Their was Nothing any different at jersey on arrival and nothing of note due so after heading back to the aero club Balcony and sinking a couple of pints of Stella it was off to St Hellier for a good nights kip!!!!

Jersey Sunday 22/06/2008

I was up early as I had mailed a few people at Jersey with regards to getting round the Biz hanger/ramp etc!!!  So after a quick ramp/hanger tour I headed back to the Aero Club for “yes” the big one!!!!! Not one for a full English but “hey” it had to be done as it set you up for the day!!!!! My flight back to Birmingham was mid day so just stayed up their until 11ish and checked in!!

 Birmingham Sunday  22/06/2008

After a real smooth flight in G-BVKD Boeing 737-500 “and while in the descent” the pilot mentioned that Birmingham had 40 knot crosswinds so it may be a bit bumpy on approach!!!!!!!!! “BUMPY” he wasn’t kidding!!!!!  I was in row 4a and I was looking at the runway all the way down the approach until just before touchdown!!  When he flung the tail round and put it down on runway 15 beautifully!! So after landing a visit to the toilet was needed!!!!!! and on walking round to runway 33 to get rotation shots it was then I realized how bad the crosswinds were!!  A lot of go a rounds and very hard landings!!!! Shame they were landing the wrong end for shots!!!

Nothing of interest at Brum apart from a Air Transat Airbus A310-300 and a Spanish Gulf 200/Astra which landed as we were taxying out on G-BVZE another Boeing 737-500 for dept to Aberdeen.

Aberdeen Monday 23/06/2008

First thing on arrival at Aberdeen was a bit of stotty cake for my breakfast!! Mmm nice!! Then off to the spectators area which is south of the terminal and good for shots where I stayed all day!  Just before I checked in it was onto the mound north of the terminal to shoot some of  Bristow’s Helicopters and day stoppers!!

What a great flight it was with a clear sunny evening sky, we had some great views of the scenery over the borders and then over the lakes and also Manchester!!! Which made up for the long drive back home to Stockton!!!
