A good friend of mine rang me and asked if Andy S and myself was up for "A Whirlwind 2 Day Tour of Hungary", and a few more places thrown in chasing around after  MiG-21,s ?, Around 150 of them ( What a question i thought ?) "YES"  of course i would go. So over the last few weeks a plan was put together that would involve Return Flights from East Mid's to Bratislava, A Hire Car, Two Hotels and the Chartering of a Light Aircraft for an over flight of a base to see some Mig,s that cannot be seen from the outside.

Day 1

At last Friday (05-10-07) came and we set off to East Mids for the flight to Bratislava (I know not even the right country but read on) we flew from EMA on the 17-30 Ryanair flight and arrived in Bratislava at 23-30 after 1/2 hour ATC delay at EMA.

The only things we got on arrival was

OM-BYR Tu-154 Slovac Gov'mt
OM-FLY Be-200

After the usual bag grab and passport session in arrivals we got the Hire car and went off South into Hungary. We crossed the border into Hungary and started an interesting drive, We saw the aftermath of 2 car crashes one been very nasty every panel on each side smashed and no front or rear ends left and the second well rolled into a field, Ouch !, The night driving antics of the locals is a little different to other places i have been and seeing the accidents it did not surprise us at all what we had seen.  We got to where we need to be and found a Hotel near a place called Cam only 30km or so from Zalaegerzeg where the GA field was for the over flight. The Hotel was very nice and clean and only £20-00 for the three of us per night What a bargain !. After 5 hours kip it was up and at it and in the car to Zalaegerzeg the GA field was found

Day 2

ZALAEGERZEG 06-10-07

No body was around when we arrived and the guy we wanted had not rung us back to confirm the flight, So things were looking a bit grim but we rang the bell on the door and it was answered by a man who said he would do it for us not the guy who we had talked to on the phone but someone else, "YEH IT'S ON" we thought. Our pilot was an ex Mig-21 pilot so knew what we wanted to see and he did not let us down. The time was 08-00 and he said we would go at 09-00. Time went very slowly as it dose in these situations but when 08-45 came around we walked out to the Ce-172 and got in and too off at 09-00 heading North East to Papa.

The only two aircraft on the field were

HA-ABN An-2 ( An ex Aeroflot aircraft)
HA-JDA Ce-172 (Our ride over Papa) Named "Wild Goose"

The flight lasted around 1,1/2 hours during which Phil flew the Cessna for around 25 min's, His first time in a light aircraft and the first time he had ever flown anything, We are all still here so i guess he must have done something right. We approached the base at Papa and started 5 or 6 runs down the store lines at around 300ft taking lots of photo's as we went here is the log from the sortie.

PAPA 06-10-07

Nothing of the store be seen from the outside so this is the only way of seeing the aircraft unless you can get on the base. The first thing we saw was an active Mi-24 on the main ramp this turned out to be

ACTIVE RAMP

712 MiL-24

I will do the log as it is in European Wrecks and Relics in serial order, We have read all but 2 the serials off from our photo's and these two do agree with where the aircraft are located and the head count is correct as well, So we are all happy with what we got.

We knew 1 Mig-23 was missing or hangared and 2 Mig-21,s have gone or are Hangared but nothing could be done about that. On the last run down the store line we "Buzzed the Tower" at around 100ft, A line from Top Gun went through everyone's head i think "Negative Ghost Rider the pattern is full", Hmmmmmm well it was great fun and even the ATC guys in the tower waved at us as we shot past.

To give you an idea of what we saw have a look at this link http://www.targeta.co.uk/papa_2005.htm We only got the air to ground shots but i was well worth the effort of doing, A total 100% good day to fly.

Back with our feet on the ground we had a longish drive to the next area of the country we wanted to be in so off we went after thanking our pilot very much for all his help.

Around two hours later we were driving through

SZEKESFEHERVAR 06-10-07

At the side of the road is a Ka-26 painted Red, The first of 3 "Drive Past" logs today

BORGOND 06-10-07

Next was an old Russian Nuclear strike airfield where Mig-23,s were at one time ready to strike Western Europe. We were looking for a Mig-15 we had to drive through the base and across the runway to see it and it gave you a strange feeling to know what was here and not that long ago.

There were a few more GA bits around but we did not have the time to have a good look so we left for the next call which was

SEREGELYES 06-10-07

This is in the garden of a house on the main road through the village and is not easy to see but we did find it and the owner who was cutting the Grass invited us in to take some photos of it. The next big problem was saying no to him for the offer of a beer !, He wanted to talk about his Helicopter and show us round it but we needed to go,  A very friendly guy and i bet the beer would have been good.

We saw the Gate guard and then went round the back to view the Mig-29 that are in store here, We read off everything we could see round here but near the gate were 3 An-26,s and some L-39,s we could not get. We left because an Air Force 4x4 pulled up at the other side of the fence and started following us along the track we were on and one of the "Goon Towers"  was occupied we were been watched !.
