Bagby Airfield Fly-In Saturday 4th May 2019

David Thompson

A selection of photo's taken on the day

The weather forecast for the fly-in had looked poor all week regardless of which BBC weather forecaster was presenting it and even Louise , Sarah or Susan or for that matter Ben , Stav or Tomasaz could not make it look or sound as good as the recent record breaking Easter holiday weather and so it proved to be as I set off south from Teesside on that Saturday morning. The skies to the north were black with the only blue sky well off to the west as I drove down the A19 arriving at Bagby just before 9am unable to see the edge of the North York Moors just a few miles to the east .

The cloud base was metaphorically lifted by the sight of the airfields newest and largest resident sat on the grass outside of the clubhouse , Pilatus PC-12/47E N359ST , which had arrived the previous day routing from the United States via Keflavik and Wick arriving at Bagby around 16:00 before a quick trip to Gamston and back . The first movement and only arrival of the day was PA-46 Malibu Mirage 2-SNOW which arrived from Liverpool bringing jockeys in for the days programme at nearby Thirsk Races . This was followed shortly afterwards by the second movement of the day and only departure , certainly up until 14:00 when I departed , when G-JAFS left for Newmarket with some jockeys on board . Not so much horses for courses , more like jockeys for courses !

Sadly the resident Fw-44 Stieglitz D-EMNN was weather bound in Berlin while attending a vintage aircraft meeting and it’s partner Tiger Moth T7794 was down at old Warden for the weekend leaving new resident Fokker S-11 E-15 as the star of the day for me particularly as the owner took the covers off it and gave it a good ground-run and while the sun made one of its brief appearances ! The Fokker returned to Bagby on the 2 April after stays at

RAF Topcliffe and latterly RAF Linton On Ouse and is parked over on the south side amongst several aircraft and really needs to go under cover but it’s large wing-span makes it too big for any of the present hangars and groundworks have begun on a new hangar primarily for the Pilatus but hopefully this 1947 Dutch beauty too ?

Amongst the northern hangars Jodel G-BLXO has moved once again and was having a transponder fitted while Tom Whites Bagby Aviation hangar is much more easy to move around having sold Pup G-AXDV to fellow Bagby resident Mark Badminton who then also sold it and replaced it with another Pup G-AXOZ , a former Teesside resident itself back in the early 1980’s and which is still at Bagby albeit with a different owner . Popular aircraft is the Beagle Pup !
