Bagby Airfield
David Thompson
A selection of photo's taken on the day
The weather
forecast for the fly-in had looked poor all week regardless of
which BBC weather forecaster was presenting it and even Louise ,
Sarah or Susan or for that matter Ben , Stav or Tomasaz could
not make it look or sound as good as the recent record breaking
Easter holiday weather and so it proved to be as I set off south
from Teesside on that Saturday morning. The skies to the north
were black with the only blue sky well off to the west as I
drove down the A19 arriving at Bagby just before 9am unable to
see the edge of the North York Moors just a few miles to the
east .
The cloud base
was metaphorically lifted by the sight of the airfields newest
and largest resident sat on the grass outside of the clubhouse ,
Pilatus PC-12/47E N359ST , which had arrived the previous day
routing from the United States via Keflavik and Wick arriving at
Bagby around 16:00 before a quick trip to Gamston and back . The
first movement and only arrival of the day was PA-46 Malibu
Mirage 2-SNOW which arrived from Liverpool bringing jockeys in
for the days programme at nearby Thirsk Races . This was
followed shortly afterwards by the second movement of the day
and only departure , certainly up until 14:00 when I departed ,
when G-JAFS left for Newmarket with some jockeys on board . Not
so much horses for courses , more like jockeys for courses !
RAF Topcliffe
and latterly RAF Linton On Ouse and is parked over on the south
side amongst several aircraft and really needs to go under cover
but it’s large wing-span makes it too big for any of the present
hangars and groundworks have begun on a new hangar primarily for
the Pilatus but hopefully this 1947 Dutch beauty too ?
