During last years
trip to Airbus at Toulouse it was suggested we should
make it an annual trip, alternating between their
Blagnac and Finkenwerder facilities, then Dave R had the

The extent of
spotting on arriving at Manchester was limited to a
quick nip up to the top of the T1 MSCP, where the top
level is now reserved for hire cars, as an overzealous
security plod was quick to inform us.
After leaving here we drove around to bag the stored MAX
8's before heading for beer and steak at our Premier Inn
hotel - where Dave R was tickled at seeing a knackered
Ford Mondeo still sits in the car park...five years and
counting! |

It was up at the
crack of dawn to drop the car off at the T3 Meet and
Greet and check-in for our early morning O'Leary to
Hamburg...starting what was to become a common theme of
troublesome airport experiences throughout the trip.
Security was as straight forward as airport security
gets these days - in other words 'not very' - but the
real
inconvenience was when we were called to board and then
made to wait in the void between the gate and the jet
bridge. We quickly grew suspicious and our fears were confirmed when we were all
called back to the gate after about 30 minutes. The
official line from the handling agent was that the
cleaners hadn't shown up the night before, but as most
reading this will know the excuse does not usually match
the reason and we expected a replacement aircraft. We were told there would be a
further 30 minute wait, and eventually a cleaning van
did turn up at the aircraft but with just a driver, no staff,
leading to the cabin crew having to offload about four
binliners full of rubbish themselves. Then when we did
finally board, the floor was absolutely pitted with
debris from what must have been a
typical stag-do/lads holiday-type destination for the
previous flight. A shame really because it was my first
time on a 737 sporting Boeing's relatively new "Sky"
interior and what an improvement compared to older
examples. |

On landing at
Hamburg I was unorganised and should have logged more
than I did when we taxiied past the biz/GA apron, which
is about the only opportunity to get this stuff as it is
very remote and not really accessible from on the
ground. We picked up the hire car and headed straight
for Finkenwerder where we were booked on a
German-speaking tour in the afternoon. After the tour we
came back and spent a couple of hours on the terminal
viewing terrace. |

We spent 10 minutes
on the viewing mound at Finkenwerder before heading off
for our tour, and the common theme of poor airport
experiences was countered by a common theme of lucky
tour experiences! With no more than a minute to spare we
blagged our way off the German-speaking public tour, and
on to a privately organised spotter tour!! What's more,
the co-organisers were local, one from Newcastle, the
other not only from Darlo but also the son of a
prominent FoDTVA member - small world!!! As it turned
out, we were sharing the same coach as the public tour,
but whilst they went off to learn about rivets and
bolts, we were peering through the windows of the
various production halls, with airframes going in the
bag like coal into a steam engine! We briefly returned
to the viewing mound before heading back to the main
airport. |

Once again it was
up early and straight to check-in where a lengthy queue was
experienced and hindered further by a tech check-in
computer, and Hamburg it seems hasn't caught up with the
rest of the world yet with only a couple of self-service
check-in desks exclusive to Lufthansa. With a large
queue still behind us (many of whom were West African
with a lorry load of luggage per person) it was a wonder
just how quickly we boarded and got away once through to
the gate. |

We only had about
an hour long connection in Brussels but we put it to
good use logging almost everything in. In recent weeks
Brussels Airlines had almost exclusively used one of two
leased CSA Czech Airlines A319s on their Toulouse route;
OK-NEO/P, the former with Eurowings titles and the
latter in a special scheme, so the
variety was diluted a little when we were bussed to
OO-SSV. |

I was very
pleasantly surprised to find the Belgian Air Component
have a base adjacent to the airport and share a runway,
we logged everything here except an Embraer VIP
transport and an A321, although the latter was easily
traceable as they only have one. |

On landing at
Toulouse it was straight to pick up the hire car before
heading off to enjoy some more unexpected luck with the
Airbus tour...or tours as it would become. First we
found a brief window of opportunity to cover the
northern areas of the airport. We were booked on a
French-speaking A350 tour, we then managed to talk our
way on to a French-speaking A380 tour immediately after! The
guy checking us in then told us if we did the A380 tour
first, both would then be in English - result! On the
A380 tour, which we'd done before, we nearly fell out of
our seats when the coach took an unexpected and very
valuable left turn along the A380 flight test line
(which is more A330/50 these days). This first tour was
otherwise very poignant as they discussed the imminent
and premature end of production, with six deliveries
this year, six next year and the final one in 2021. You
can sense the sadness amongst the Airbus staff. The A380
tour concluded inside the back of Aeroscopia's A400M
prototype where the guide revealed their is 400 tonnes,
or miles, or some other ridiculous amount of wiring in
the nose cone alone! The second tour was a bit fast
paced, with the coach often going just one mile per hour
too fast for us to log something or other! The guide
quickly realised we were experts in our field and asked
us more questions than the rest of the group asked her!!
By the time both tours were over it was getting late so
it was back to the hotel for grub and a few drinks. |

On the Sunday it
was up not quite as early and after a good brekkie we
covered the South/West parts of the airport that we
hadn't quite had time for yesterday, before heading for
Francazal where a nice surprise was a military exercise
taking place involving four Xingu's. ATR seem to have
some kind of cabin furbishing facility here and perhaps
a paint shop too, and Airbus have also recently started
storing new A320s here, lessors also send in the odd
vintage A320/737. We got everything on the ground
including some right gems. |

On arriving back at
Toulouse we covered the final area we hadn't yet logged
- the Delivery Centre, before settling in to an Airbus
staff car park near the runway 32L threshold for a few
hours. It started off boring as no test flying was being
carried out and there was little terminal activity, but
eventually the clouds started to break allowing us to
entertain ourselves with overflights. |

Another early
morning to drop the hire car off and check-in for our
Flymaybe flight back to Manchester, which got off
to a turbulent start at breakfast in the hotel when Dave
R got a text from the airline under the headline
"there's been some changes to your flight"...fearing the
worst it turned out to be a 30 minute delay inbound and
a 90 minute delay in arriving back at Manchester - there
was only one explanation, our E-Jet was now a Dash, and
sure enough we soon spotted G-ECOT trundling south on
FR24. The Dash is six seats shy of the Embraer 175 and
sure enough at check-in the staff were looking for the
same amount of volunteers to come off the flight,
instead going back to Manchester via Munich with
Lufthansa and €250 compensation each to
boot. Normally this would have played right into our
hands - another airport added to the trip free of charge
- but alas I had work at 5.30pm and Dave R was up early
the next day for the same reason and didn't want to be
back late. Only two volunteers had come forward by the
time we got to the front (well, one - I don't think the
guys wife was too impressed) so I assume the four people
at the back of the queue ended up sh*t out of luck. It
was my (CS) first time on a turboprop so I was pleased
to tick that box. Airbus must have been playing 'musical
airplanes' as we noted a good few new ones from the
terminal. |

In the end, we were
only about 40 minutes late into Manchester and the Dash
was comfortable and smooth enough, if a bit droney,
though we were ahead of the props and apparently it's
much worse if you're aft of them! Not a great deal was
logged at Manchester on return - we were done with
spotting by that point! |
