It was time for another
"non spotting" holiday, a cruise around the Caribbean followed by some time in
Florida was booked and we headed over to Manchester Airport. After a night in a
hotel we dropped the bags at T2 and headed for the gate, the first leg being the
daily US Airways A333 service to Philadelphia. Our steed was at the gate
(N278AY) and we boarded on time, runway 23R was in use on single runway ops and
we made our way to the holding point. I turned on my "on-board" scanner to find
the departure would be via WAL then towards BEL to then join the NAT tracks over
the pond, it was nice to see both of Virgins new A333s parked at T2 along with a
few other bits.

we arrived at a sunny Philly, the terminal is sectioned off with fingers and
cul-de-sac areas. International flights arrive at section "A" with the main
runways spread out in front of you. I wandered through the fingers and settled
in "C" which gave a good view of the activity, which is brisk. Dominant carrier
is US Airways but most other US carriers fly to Philly and a few european ones.
The hub concept means that US Airways affiliate carriers feed into here, mostly
painted in the current livery or versions of the old "dark" colours, although
some keep a "token" aircraft in the liveries of Republic, PSA, etc etc. Photos
are possible through glass but only into the cul-de-sac due to APU haze etc, but
it is a place worth visiting, Biz is parked on an easterly apron with its own
arrival runway but is seen on departure from the main runways and some commuter
stuff lands on the cross runway, again they depart on 26L in the main. Basically
you need to be alert at all times!!

We then boarded our next flight to Fort
Lauderdale, again with US Airways on an A321. It was dark on arrival so went
straight to the hotel. Next morning we hopped on the shuttle bus to Port
Everglades, conveniently situated near the end of the easterly runway!! Once on
the ship we spent a few hours watching the departures from the back of the ship,
very civilised!!

Aviation then took a back seat whilst
we visited St Kitts, Barbados and Dominica. We passed airports on these islands
but never stopped!! I had negotiated with "er indoors" for a day on Maho beach
in St Maarten so we were off the ship into a taxi and on the beach by 8.30am!!
The Sunset Bar and Grille hires beds on the beach, so we were set for the
action. I wanted to see the inter island stuff and this duly started about
9.15am and remained constant all day, the airliners really start at 10.30am thru
till 2pm with AA, USA, KLM, AFR using a mixture of 757, 738, MD11 and A340. The
beach gets very busy and is clearly a tourist attraction and I can understand
why!! The sight of grown men hanging onto the perimeter fence when a Insel Air
MD80 is revving its arse off is not to be missed, the result being many of them
blown into the sea!! To summarise, if you get the chance, do it, its a nice
mixture of traffic but not busy although the photos more than make up for this.
The Sunset Bar puts the days movements onto a surf board on the beach and also
has the added incentive of offering free drinks to any topless women ( a few
took up this option!!)

We then sailed back to Fort
Lauderdale, I picked up a car and managed to have a look round the Biz areas
before we departed north. Its always worth the drive round both sides and most
things can be seen with a bit of reversing etc.

Beach, the airport is the home of the Piper factory and is vast. The FBO handles
