After a lovely day in Santa Barbara it was time to head to Mojave, the first field we passed was a busy GA field at Santa Paula in the heart of the wine region. It was only a 15 minute stop and it was next to the main highway.

It was becoming much more desert like as we carried on towards Mojave, Palmdale came after another hour and I wondered about security here but stopped anyway. The museum is nicely presented but its very difficult to see anything on the field, its massive!! The GA/Biz area is closed off so clearly Lockheed want some secrecy!!

Another hour and we arrived at Mojave around 3pm, I had booked a Days Inn here and planned to go on the tour the following morning. I has written to Steve the Airport Manager who had replied saying tours had stopped but call anyway as they were looking at starting them again so I met Steve in the terminal and he said the decision had been taken that they have perminently stopped them due to redundancies on the airfield. He said I could go anywhere around the perimeter though and I read off around 90% from the various nooks and crannies. Things are less busy here as they are concentrating on scrapping rather than storage and the main storage company is based at Victorville (see later) but it was still interesting. Scales Composites are based here and are building the Virgin Galactic fleet.

With the tour cancelled we set off early next morning heading for Victorville, I had been told there were over 250 stored liners here!! The journey took us past Edwards AFB and took about an hour, I had printed off the Google maps so I could get around the storage areas and I certainly needed them!! Massive investment is taking place here to turn it into a cargo hub alongside the re-work and painting areas. It took 3 hours to sort the job out and a bunch of flowers for Mrs R who never moaned amid the chaos and even wrote regs down while I tried to keep the car upright!! The Sat Nav in the car showed roads that were basically sand tracks populated by chipmunks and snakes so dont get out whatever you do!! But it was worth it, the main base area is easily sorted but the storage area is distant although with some patience you can get close.
