Teesside International Airport

A Definitive Timetable

As a new project and just a bit of fun, we're going to take a look at which variations of each type of airline operation was the definitive example of its kind from Teesside. The eventual goal based on our findings is to build two fictional timetables, one "idealistic" ignoring operator/aircraft availability and a second "realistic" to see how much of the first might be achievable in the current marketplace, providing of course this can be done without breaching our no-conjecture policy.

Judged on longevity, consistency and balance, we start with the based I.T. charter programme, which ran summer seasonal from 1997 through to 2007, broken down as follows:

OPERATOR A/C TYPE DATES
Airtours International Airways Airbus A320-200 1997 - 2001
MyTravel Airways Airbus A320-200 2002 - 2003
MyTravel Airways (op by Spanair) McDonnell Douglas MD-83 2004
Britannia Airways (op by TUI fly Nordic) Boeing 737-800 2005
Thomsonfly Boeing 737-800 2006 - 2007

Having laid out each summers offering in the table below, it becomes clear that 2001-2003 were marginally the most balanced and consistent years, and with Airtours being the clear dominant brand, we're able to settle on 2001 as the definitive based charter programme.

Observations

  • Fuerteventura, Heraklion and Sharm El Sheikh are perhaps surprise omissions.

  • Perhaps also surprising is that İzmir featured at all.

  • Palma, undoubtly the primary Mediterranean hot spot of all, did not feature in the based programme of 2004. No doubt w-patterns and bmibaby will have made up the difference.

Next we take a look at the independent charter programme (summer).
