Fishburn Historic Aviation Centre (Aircraft Restoration Group) https://www.facebook.com/Aircraft-Restoration-Group-1613873188864206/

The Aircraft Restoration Group is led by Mike Eastman and they hope to establish the Fishburn Historic Aviation Centre and build three hangars to house their aircraft collection. All enquiries and offers of help or support in cash or kind to Mike at the link below.

Both the Dove and Venom arrived on the 2 February 2016 and are on loan from the De Havilland Aircraft Museum at London Colney with the Primary glider being acquired from the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum in 2015 and arriving at Fishburn in late February 2016. The ARG have several other aircraft which are currently in store elsewhere and will not be moved to Fishburn until the hangar(s) are erected to provide some protection from the weather. These include Flea G-ADRZ, the unique Thurston Tawney Owl G-APWU, Spitfire FSM BR954/JP-A and an as yet unidentified Oxford Mk1! The group website is currently under re-build but like most groups these days they also have a Facebook page at the link below.

The unique Glasair Sportsman G-CLFM which is Jim Edgeworths third ‘homebuilt’ undertook its maiden flight on the 24 January with a second flight following on the 29th and the completed paperwork is now in the LAA system with the need for a certification flight by the LAA either at Turweston or Fishburn, COVID-19 permitting! There is actually a second Sportsman on the UK register, G-MHPS, but it is a long way from completion plus at least two more still in kit form.

Elsewhere the Irish registered Cherokee Arrow has been stripped back to bare metal and its place in the hangar taken by G-FBFB whilst G-BOIG is a new addition and in for maintenance. Resident C150 G-BEOK which replaced the unfortunate Chipmunk WP859/E/G-BXCP has been sold to a new owner in the Netherlands and was de-registered on the 3 March. Aerobat G-BAPI which arrived last year for maintenance was noted road-running south on the A1 on the 5th March.

COVID-19 has also forced the cancellation of the first two ARG Open Cockpit Days on the 13th April and 10th May and a decision will be made on their two further open cockpit days as well as the planned Wings & Wheels event as the national situation evolves.

No doubt my last Fishburn report for some time to come. Stay safe!

5th February 2020 - David Thompson

Having spent the morning at RAF Linton On Ouse watching the Tucano fleet being prepared for export a quick drive up the A1 and I was at Fishburn watching Paul Johnson take-off in his RV ‘TC for its final certification flight, a 2 hour endurance flight for it to be signed off by the LAA. Following some publicity on a well known Teesside Airport movements website, the beautiful Glasair Sportsman G-CLFM, which is Jim Edgeworths third ‘homebuilt’, should feature in Flyer magazine in the near future. It undertook its maiden flight on the 24 January and a second flight on the 29th and if Storm Ciara does not flood the strip more flights should follow before too long? Hopefully!

Elsewhere the long-term rebuild of Jodel G-DRIO is gathering pace with the fuselage now fully covered and sporting a new paint scheme while the Irish registered Cherokee Arrow is having its paintwork stripped down and in doing so revealing its former identity of G-BCGD in the process. Both the Rans Super Six and the C150 are for sale while former resident RV ‘EE came in for some quick maintenance from its new home at Croft and was followed not long after by another Croft resident which came in for fuel, the former D-EGEN and now G-EGEN and so saving money on a respray!

19th January 2020 - David Thompson

Not quite the Only Way Is Essex but an early morning visit to see the ARG’s latest acquisition which arrived from deep store in even deeper Essex along with an engine for the Rallye and both with thanks to Ripon Trailer Centre without whom the gyrocopter G-CDGT a Montgomerie-Parsons Two Place, would still be looking for a way out of Essex!

Today was the busiest Fishburn had seen by far for weeks if not months with both visitors and locals taking the opportunity of flying on a glorious winters day, if indeed there is such a thing? It was good to see 3 of the 4 resident Glastars fly on the same day although the fourth would struggle to even taxy in its present build state! The Acrosport was blowing the winter cobwebs off as Duncan prepares for the season ahead in the British Aerobatics Association championships, BAA website link here; https://www.aerobatics.org.uk/

Some of the long term project builds should fly this year including the beautiful Glasair Sportsman G-CLFM which is Jim Edgeworths third ‘homebuilt’ following on from RV-6A G-CCVS and Speed Wing G-CILL all of which have been built at Fishburn. Two longer term projects both belong to John Rogerson in the shape of Fury II G-FURI and a mysterious Taylor Titch both of which are little more than fuselages at present and sit alongside his Jurca Spitfire.

4th January 2020 - David Thompson

My first visit of the year and indeed the new decade and it was good to see the clubhouse full even if there was only one resident actually up in the air and with the strip still quite damp and soft too. Two visitors today including the Menestrel which flew up from its home at Wickenby and my main reason to visit having watched its progress earlier on ADS-B!

The ARG moved the Flea and Tawney Owl to Fishburn from their store near Masham on the 19 October and this was the first time I had seen the Flea since its arrival and it has come off better than the Owl which is stored outside awaiting the completion of their workshop cum hangar. My first sighting too of G-MHGS since it arrived last June and now one of 4 based Glastars. The newest resident is the Kitfox which arrived from Full Sutton in October were it was based whilst its owner undertook some tail-wheel training having previously been a flex-wing pilot and one time resident at Felixkirk.

One year ago this week saw the arrival at Fishburn of the Geordie Shore cast and crew filming their reality television series of the same name and using then resident Cherokee Six G-EDYO for some film work. There had probably never been so much excitement at Fishburn before, nor I suspect ever since. Probably! Here’s to an active and much drier year ahead although this weeks weather forecast looks ominously like a repeat of the last twelve months, sadly!
