Over the last month and a half I've been working solid, at the peak juggling 40 hours at my paid work and another 30+ odd voluntary for Skylive / DTVA, then in the weeks following catching up on gardens, allotments and other chores that got neglected. Don't get me wrong I know that was my choice to make and I love a bit of good hard graft but this last few weeks I've really felt it. So, I decided to get away for a couple of days for a little bit of r&r which meant a spotting trip. I kept it simple, down the middle to Heathrow and straight back up the middle, I didn't want to add in too many airports as you would lose the relaxation factor dashing in and out of places against the clock - it needed to be an easy-going trip. At Heathrow, I normally stop at the Terminal 5 Travelodge, which did have a good rate, but Matt (who has since booked the hotel based on my review further down the log) mentioned a new-build Premier Inn at Terminal 4 which is reported to be good for viewing (if you can get a favourable room of course). I wasn't expecting the rate to be reasonable enough given that Travelodge tend to be the only competitive chain for short notice bookings (which mine always are) so I was surprised to find a very good £64 rate for the night in question, £75 when you add in breakfast, so I booked. Mind you, car parking isn't cheap at £25 for 24 hours, but nearby Hatton Cross tube station has a 24 hour weekend rate of £5. It's also just across the road (more or less) from the famous Myrtle Avenue spot.

Luton Airport

At Luton, I wanted to see what the upper level of the new multi-storey car park is like, so I parked in the long stay car park near the Harrods ramp, which since the opening of the MSCP is now free for two hours - ideal given I always found the Harrods ramp the most awkward if I wasn't on foot. I then got the free shuttle bus running every 10 minutes to the terminal followed by a short walk to the MSCP, before a slow walk back to the long stay. In short, the MSCP is fantastic for photos, but pointless if you're just after numbers. Take advantage of this spot before a high fence goes up!!

I've only included British and Irish airframes I required at Heathrow, though it's worth noting A320 EI-DEI wears a special Irish Rugby Team livery and Flybe Dash8s just look completely out-of-place here, they seem to get priority over other departures too. My first CS100 was one of the highlights, not sure I would categorise it as a regional jet given it's size. Another highlight was the Korean 748 which is temporarily being used into Heathrow. As for the hotel, I was very impressed, it's only been open for eight weeks which is why the rate was so cheap as it is a temporary introductory offer, the place is heavily over staffed as well, which may be due to the expectation that some may throw in the towel in the early days, certainly my own place of work over staffs new openings for this reason. The car park barrier had two attendants, there were 10 or so self check-in kiosks each of which were manned nevertheless, and a couple of Concierges. The restaurant was a proper restaurant with a Maitre d' and not your usual obligratory hotel add-on, I enjoyed a 9oz Ribeye with garlic butter and skin-on chips followed by a deluxe chocolate sundae, the mouth waters just describing it to the point where I left off writing the report at this point to go and rustle up a far inferior meal! As for the view, it was just what the doctor ordered, runways 09L/R were in use, with departures on the right and arrivals on the left, only widebody arrivals using the majority of the runway were visible but I was here long enough to see them depart so no matter, otherwise I had a good view of terminals 2 and 3, the maintenance area and anything taxiing to terminal 4. Off topic but I also noted Grenfell Tower in the distance, though heat haze meant I could only see the outline and not the damage. Heat haze was also an issue for photos from the room, which would otherwise have been decent despite shooting through glass. The final thing to note with the room is if like me you like to busy yourself with other tasks and rely on engine noise to alert you to a movement, you'll struggle here as the rooms are incredibly well soundproofed, newer tech such as NEOs, Dreamliners, A350s etc were practically inaudiable.

I parked once again in the long stay, but this time walked as far as the Holiday Inn Express and back, before moving on to East Midlands. I've excluded anything still on the ground from the day before approximately 90% of which had participated in an elaborate game of musical chairs overnight as everything was on different aprons, I can't image they all flew and returned in the interim!
