My usual November non-spotting break to London came around and after I may or may not have collided my brand new month old Corsa with a funeral car transporting a family back from a service on the A11 during my last visit to the capital back in April [not my fault!]...I decided it might be best not to drive this time around!

I could have booked a cheap enough train ticket but being an aviation enthusiast that would have been somewhat blasphemous so air travel was a no-brainer. With plenty of direct flights within easy reach, loyalty would only allow me to go from DTVA via Amsterdam with KLM, and as it happens it was around about the same price as the direct flights from Newcastle or Leeds when you factor in the costs of travelling to and parking at those airports. From a spotting point of view it made more sense too as I got to reap the fruit of two major hub airports.

Day One ~ Sunday 27th November 2016

I'll try my best to give an unbiased review of the DTVA experience but you might think otherwise as it was mostly positive. I arrived at the airport and it was a doddle; checked-in straight away with no queues, I had a bit of craic with the DM and then through security where the only hold up was when the KLM crew rocked up and they obviously get priority so I had a small wait, security were even friendly and delivered on the customer service front!! That said, I think it's just a case of the right people were on shift. There is no atmosphere whatsoever and you do get the ghost town feel, another common complaint is a lack of duty free and other retail, but to be honest WH Smith and the Swissport Café between them provide everything you could possibly need. Although this is a rare example, it was nice to see it actually looked like an airport as well thanks to the Mid East Jet Boeings.

The flight itself was pleasant enough, if a little noisy. Otherwise the Fokker 70s are emaculate and you would think they were brand new, passengers seem to prefer them over the Embraer as well so better fuel efficiency must be the only attraction for KLM. On arrival in Amsterdam we landed on runway 06 "Kaagbaan" which was ideal being adjacent to our parking apron. I passed through passport control/customs despite not needing too due to having a connecting flight as I wanted to visit the excellent Panorama Terrace, I can't decide if this was wise or not though as it took 30 minutes to pass through a shambolic passport control and for the sake of how long I had on the terrace it would have been a lot easier to have just stayed airside and parked myself at either gate D31 or G8, which are best for spotting (thanks to Matt Falcus for that advice).

On leaving Amsterdam we spent most of the flight on the ground taxiing when the pilot - purely by co-incidence I suspect - stumbled across a runway, seized his chance and took off. Joking aside, we departed from 36L "Polderbaan" which is a four mile or 20 minute taxi from the KLM Cityhopper ramp!

Didn't get much chance to do any spotting at Heathrow other than a couple of 'whales', it was straight off the plane and onto the tube into London, but not before Border Control collared me for a spot check - trying to explain why I had popped into Amsterdam on my way from the north east to London was not the easiest part of the trip!!

Day Four ~ Wednesday 30th November

Today things took a turn for the worse, the family break was over and it was time to go to Heathrow where I was spending the night in the T5 Travelodge prior to flying back home tomorrow. There are better airport hotels for photography but the top floor of the Travelodge allows arrivals and departures for both runways to be logged with ease. The first problem I had was my camera had run out of battery, I wasn't too bothered as I was more concerned with numbers on this trip, but the second problem was they had no top floor rooms left! In fact, they had no airport-facing rooms full stop! Luckily the room I was allocated offered good views of 27L departures, so I breathed a sigh of relief but it seems this was premature...I'd checked in at 2.50pm and what happens at 3pm?? - a runway change!! Nightmare! I'd only logged three or four movements! The receptionist hadn't been too helpful during my request for a high level airport facing room, so the moment I suspected there'd been a shift change I was straight back down to see if I could move rooms, the new receptionist was much more helpful but you can't get blood out of a stone and the simple fact was there were no suitable rooms. I could have gone onto the roof of the Travelodge multistorey car park, but it was far too cold so I went in search of non-aviation entertainment, with little success and much bordem.

Day Five ~ Thursday 1st December

To partially compensate for the previous evenings disaster, I set an alarm for 6am, way earlier than necessary but I didn't want to waste as much as a minute on sleep when I could be spotting. The day started with a travesty - the Travelodge all-you-can-eat traditional breakfast had no baked beans!! I spent half an hour spotting from my room as they were back on 27L, then I made my way to Terminal 4 and went straight to the gate areas starting at one end and working my way back to where I thought my flight would park - but guess where the sod did park!! No matter, I had a good view of both runways from the gate I was at.

On arrival back at Schiphol we landed on 36R or "Aalsmeerbaan", I remained airside this time and chose gate D31 as I'd been to G8 (the other good vantage point) on the first leg, where I spent about half an hour before heading to my gate at D6. The view from D6 was very obstructed but I could see the approach to both arrival runways the other being 36C "Zwanenburgbaan", that was until a KLM 737 parked up and its jetway blocked the view of 36C. On departure we once again taxiied almost to the North Sea for departure on 36L.

Had I not stopped for any reason, from stepping off the plane at DTVA I could have walked through my front door just half an hour later, and at 9 miles to the south west I don't live particularly close to the airport so it really is quite remarkable. I had a bit chat with Gordon from Special Branch who was with border control checking the passengers...luckily he was a bit more understanding than the guy at Heathrow!! The only thing worthy of note other than the Boeings on returning was regular Falcon N978PW.

Considering it was a non-spotting trip it was quite successful, even if I did come away with zero photos. I would encourage everyone within our catchment area to consider going via Amsterdam to their final destination even if direct flights are available, because it may look more expensive to start with, but when you factor everything in it quickly balances out, and Amsterdam is easy to connect through and if you go through security to landside there is a whole world of things to keep you occupied in Schiphol Plaza while you wait for your next flight.
