Hamburg and Airbus Factory Dave Rose 23/9/14 - 24/9/14
Before the weather turned nasty I thought I
would catch up on activities at the Airbus factory in Hamburg. I
fancied Toulouse but couldn’t get onto a factory tour so this
would be my third visit to Hamburg. I had been staying in London
for a few days so jumped onto a train at St Pancras and was at
Luton Airport in 45 mins. The sun was out and I had a few hours
before my flight so had a walk round the Biz aprons, highlights
were Nigerian Air Force G550
5N-FGW, Citation 560
UR-UQA and
Brasilian G500 PR-NOC. The 2nd Wizz Air explosion of
the day started at about 1pm, so managed to bag a few new ones
before checking in for my flight to Hamburg.

Once airside the extended terminal gives good views once upstairs along the piers, nothing much can be missed from here. Easyjet A319 G-EZSM got me to Hamburg in just over an hour and once I picked up a car I headed to the Café at the General Aviation terminal. This has changed hands since my last visit and is now operated by Air Hamburg, they encourage the purchase of a drink or two and the views are very good across the airfield.Lufthansa Technik is situated here and they were working on A380 D-AIMC and installing the interior on Qatar Royal Flight Boeing 748 A7-HHE and they both had their tails outside the hangar, how civilised!!

Once it got dark I headed for the hotel,
the Park Inn by Radisson which is a couple of miles away next to
the A7 Autobahn. Next morning it was an early start to check out
the night-stoppers before heading to the Airbus factory at
Finkenwerder, arriving there about 8am. I settled at the
spotting area next to the runway which is ideal as its next to
the delivery centre and you can see most movements between the
hangars at the factory. The first arrival at around 8.30am was
the employee shuttle from Toulouse, this is operated by Germania
with a 319
D-ASTY. I had a walk to the end of the delivery
centre to identify the 9 aircraft outside then a couple of
flight tests started, firstly D-AVZR for EVA Air, followed 30
minutes later by
D-AVZQ for Air China. They both returned while
I was on the tour along with a couple of Belugas.
My English speaking tour was booked for
12pm, so I drove to the Globetrotter tours office which is next
to the main Airbus security gate and managed to park on the main
road opposite. Tours are 14 Euro and there were 17 of us on this
one, the guide being an ex employee of Airbus for 40 years. We
caught the bus under the runway and started off with a video of
the history of Airbus etc before moving into the production
area. The first hangar contained the rear fuselage of 12
aircraft, and a detailed commentary was given through earpieces
on what was happening. I don’t bother with fuselages but it was
interesting anyway. The guide identified me as a spotter and
suggested I looked through the hangar windows as we moved round,
which all helped!! The “mating” process hangar is not now
visited as the noise of the pop-rivetor is now deemed too
dangerous!! Although it does mean more time in the hangars where
“real” aircraft are!! Here they attach the wings, rudder,
undercarriage and engines before painting and the hangar
contained 12 examples.
The tour lasts 2 hours and is worth it,
even though they do explain “nuts and bolts” in great depth!!
Here is the log for the day, it contains
only complete frames. Some could only be identified by
construction numbers due to the factory equipment but their new
operators will become clear very quickly, they deliver at least
1 aircraft a day from Hamburg on average.

After the tour I headed back to Hamburg and
had a few hours on the excellent Terminal roof viewing
galleries. They are glazed but had gaps where shots can be
obtained.

The factory tour is ideal as you don’t see
many of the 320 family built here ever again, as the main
customers are in the far east and America and combined with a
few interesting visitors to Hamburg its well worth the effort.
