Amsterdam "Nuclear Security Summit" 22 - 23 March 2014 - Dave Anderson, Dave Rose, Ian McMaster, Aidan Williamson, Ian Ellington

A very large summit had been planned for the Hague for many years, as time drew nearer figures of up to 58 world leaders would be attending and visiting aircraft to be parked on the huge 18R Palderbaan runway, this meant this could also be a huge event for enthusiasts. With rumours of aircraft arriving on Saturday & Sunday for a Monday meeting we booked our KLM flights from DTV leaving 6.00am on Saturday returning 9.30pm on Sunday. Some weeks before the event the spotters grapevine went into overtime with a number of different scenarios being offered, in the end it turned out that Sunday & Monday were to be the best days but with our flights booked Sat & Sun were to be our days. The Dutch security were taking this event very seriously to the extent that a large area around the 18R/18C runways would be closed off to traffic and photography anywhere near the airport banned totally or face huge fines.
The day arrived and our flight in Fokker 70 PH-KZE left and arrived on time, it wasn't long before we picked up the car and headed out for a look, first call was the general aviation parking area, no police and not too much in, the MD83 painted in FIFA markings was nice and then later the Honeywell Embraer ERJ-170 made an appearance.

A few mins back up the road is the McDonalds official viewing area, we parked up here and made camp for the day, this area gives good views over the airport and by using our SBS nothing was missed that landed on runway 18C. There was a hefty police presence and as soon as a camera appeared they were straight over giving a friendly warning not to use it. Ian Ellington being only a photographer decided to visit the Aviadrome museum and Lelystad airfield as only a Chinese 747 & Nigerian 737 were due for the summit later in the day, this is his report.
Lelystad 22/03/2014 Ian Ellington
Originally this place wasn’t on my to do lists, ‘well not yet
anyway’ but after reading there was a ban on photography around
Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport for the Nuclear summit, I thought id
give it a go while the DTV Mafia checked out the proceedings
regarding photography at Netherlands premier Airport.
Not long after arrival at Lelystad I spoke to Dave Ando on the
phone, the rumours were right that anyone caught taking shots
would have an on the spot fine of 350 big ones!! “mmmmmmm” So……
after the bad news I then decided to take my time around
Lelystrad and the Aviodrome and then head back and meet up with
the lads at Schipol midday ish!
After arrival at Lelystad Airport, I drove straight to the
Martinair flying club and left the car there then walked to the
small terminal where I was given a form to fill in regarding
ramp access, ‘very helpful’ the girl from operations pointed me
to the door and said enjoy, but don’t enter any hangers unless
theirs someone who’ll give you permission to enter and stay
behind the red line while on the ramp but your good to go!!
So….. with my hi viz vest on it was off to the far end of the
ramp first to work the two stored Netherlands Air Force Fokker
50s which are up for sale, then it was a slow walk back round
the ramps and hangers back to the terminal, to be fair their was
a couple of hangers which were locked but looked as though a
couple of biz/large twins etc could be housed in, but most are
for tins and microlights etc, one though had a gem in it, and
for me the star of the trip! AP-BHZ FK27-500 Friendship, I
honestly thought this had left but after speaking to the guy in
the hanger, he said it was up for sale having arrived here early
last year!! Nice airworthy Catalina PH-PBY in their which this
guy was working on!
After heading round the corner I saw a Falcon 900 and something
in the hanger being sprayed, looked like a DHC8-300 but it went
unidentified as it was getting a coat of paint!! The next hanger
round the corner was the reason why a visit was on the cards!
AIS Airlines with their BAe Jetstream 31s! Lucky enough I did
eventually get into the hanger and luck would have it four of
the type were in along with a German Citation and a couple of
tins in AIS colours! After this I then went along the ramp to
the KLM Flying school but it was locked up unlike the Martinair
one where on arrival was shown round and worked their fleet of
TB20s/TB9s and a Twin star, after that I was treat to coffee and
biscuits by the chief instructor while giving a brief history of
the flying club, so….. after a nice chilled out couple of hours
and handing my hi viz vest back into operations and saying
thanks, I then headed to the Aviodrome and then back to the Dam
to catch up with the lads!
What I shot so no way a full log.

Amsterdam Saturday 22nd March 2014
Well, not a whole lot doing here, movements in the afternoon were slow and not much to excite arrived, topping up the KLM & Transavia fleets as well as some of the regular freight flights and Chinese airlines kept us busy and the four USAF C17's were a nice addition helping to bring in the Obama kit, portable BBQ etc etc. After studying the map we decided to try and find a spot outside of the no photographing zone to catch the Nigerian 737 that was due around 5.30pm, we did without any hassle and this area would be Ian Ellington's home for Sunday. This is a log of the freight & interesting movements during the day.

We had booked the Sheraton hotel at the airport, our rooms 709, 719 gave reasonable views over low cost terminal and some of the long haul piers as well as looking out towards runways 18R/18C as well as being able to see most of the arrivals on 27.
Amsterdam Sunday 23rd March 2014
Awake early, though some of us didn't sleep much, memo to self ensure future rooms don't come with a built in "chain saw (snore) that ran all night" or was it Ian M?? (soz I know I was as bad!) it was raining outside so we logged from the hotel window till around 8.30am when it brightened up and we headed back out to McDonalds, Ian Ellington headed out into the wilderness to photograph landing aircraft on 18C as this we guessed would be the main runway for visiting govt aircraft.
Sunday was another very steady day, though today we had 15 visiting aircraft for the summit, around lunch time we decided to take the hire car back and take our chances spotting & photographing from pier G. This area has some nice chairs and comfy "sofas" to catch a few Zzz's in the quiet spells and has good views looking over the landing runways. Although the windows are tinted it is possible to get some good photo's in the sunshine. Some other spotters were here and we were soon joined by the police, all very friendly checking that no photo's were taken with long lenses and questionned where we were staying and when we were leaving. With clear skies a number of overflights were identified to keep us busy during quiet times. We kept in regular touch with Ian E out in the field who by now had found himself a further disguise as a sports photographer, just happened to be a ladies football match he was photographing!!!
