Finally decided to go back to Florida after last visiting there over 10 years ago, it seems that the old props & jets are disappearing fast, so thought its time to have a blast around to see the highlights of what’s left of the Florida Classics, while also enjoying some warm sunshine for a change!!!
The original plan was to visit New York outbound for me to pop into a camera shop to collect a camera and lens then head down to Florida, but this plan didn’t happen as a mate was in Florida a couple of months earlier and picked them up for me, so the flights outbound were not really needed in the end, however the flights gave Hamish and myself a taste of the Airbus A380, something of which neither of us had experienced flying in before!
I started my jaunt from Newcastle while Hamish left as always from Edinburgh, we were both flying Air France/Cityjet BAe RJ85s on the outbound to Paris, where we would both meet up for the flight across the pond.

Newcastle Tuesday 24th Jan
Not a lot in what I can remember of the night stoppers other than the retro KLM Boeing 737-800 PH-BXA and my ride over to Paris which was EI-WXA RJ85. Nice smooth flight over on (AFR1559), but if I’m honest, I was a bit disappointed with the breakfast on the flight, only a coffee and a bag of nuts and also the taxi to the gate! “Nearly 25 minutes from landing on runway 27L to taxing to Terminal 2!!

Paris Charles de Gaulle Tuesday 24th Jan
I was in first to arrive at Paris as Hamish had the option of a later flight, so I just headed to the end of Terminal 2 pier where I stayed for the remainder of the 4 hours taking shots through the glass of stuff arriving and departing on runway 26R/26L.
If you’re visiting Paris (CDG) taking shots normally you have to contact the authorities their to gain a pass, but with me just shooting through the terminal glass I didn’t bother, and to be honest didn’t get any grief off the local police/security staff.

Terminal 2 was also our departure terminal where the mighty A380 was already at the gate! F-HPJC was our ride (AFR006). The flight was on time for a scheduled departure of 13.30pm, and started to board at 12.45pm, “but no sign of Hamish!” Just as I thought I was going on my own, up popped Scotland’s Auther Daley panting and sweating like Steptoe’s horse! he had the same problem after landing in the long taxi to terminal 2 as I had!! “Close one” Anyway we both boarded on the top deck at the back of the aircraft, to be honest much the same as any other aircraft until you look out of the windows then realize how high up you are, looking down on the likes of Boeing 767 and 777s etc! One other thing I noticed was how quiet these aircraft are. Over all we had a nice smooth flight with the odd bit of turbulence at which point I thought I was in a Cessna 150!! Getting bounced about a bit! We had a stiff head wind which did slow us down making the flight time 7 hours 45 minutes. Nice little gizmo is the camera in the top of the tail, good to watch the crosswind landing at New York on the TV screen in the seats.

New York Tuesday 24th Jan

On landing though the problems started, if im honest don’t think New York JFK is ready for the A380 yet as once we left the runway the pilot shut down all the engines and then we got towed to stand, which was just enough for the mighty Airbus to squeeze into, so adding another 40 minutes to our arrival time. With us only having 2 hours transit for our flight down to Tampa, we knew then we would struggle to get on it as we had to get our bags, go through customs and check back in again! At which point we were told that we wouldn’t make the Delta MD88 flight down to Tampa, so we were rebooked on an American A/Ls B737-800 some 2 hours later.
It was just getting dark by the time we got into the terminal so didn’t see much out on the airfield and didn’t get any shots for the log! A couple of Evergreen Boeing 747-200s loads of Jet Blue A320s, Swiss & Qantas A330s, Royal Air Maroc Boeing 767-300, and our ride down to Tampa, N970AN Boeing 737-800 as (AAL1787)
The flight was empty so we just sprawled out and enjoyed the 2 and a half hour flight with only a coffee for refreshment! Think American are struggling at the moment??

Tampa Tuesday 24th Jan
We had a nice approach into Tampa as we flew right over Mcdill AFB and noted at least 5 KC135’s on the ground, and were followed in by a World MD11; also two KC135s were seen as we taxied to stand! But it had been a long day so it was straight round to pick up the car and find the hotel for the night!

Tampa Wednesday 25th Jan
After what can be described as a leisurely breakfast we headed out to Tampa International, we did the usual quick tour of the perimiter first, checking out the two USAF KC135s that we seen from last nights arrival, both Ohio based and looked as though they would be leaving soon! So we headed for the multi story short/long stay car park for a couple hours shooting. Tasty shots from here can be had as aircraft rotate on runway 18R with the coast/buildings as a backdrop and with the added bonus of the sun behind upto late afternoon. One of the KC135s did depart, but a very late rotation, which was a shame really!
On leaving though we did a more in depth tour of the ramps and FBO’s etc, Glad we did as I didn’t know World are based here with their MD11s, After a knock on the door we had a very nice ramp tour where three MD11s and a North American Boeing 757 were parked up and truly got worked!! So thanks to the guy who was in charge at the time of the visit and letting us shoot these beasts.
Good start to the trip!

Tampa is a busy airport with plenty of Southwest, American, Delta, US Air, Jet Blue, United and a couple of visits by Frontier and Spirit

The plan for the week was to head upto to Daytona on the I-4 and then head down the I-95 to Miami visiting most of the interesting fields on the way, so after a good three hours at Tampa it was off to Lakeland for our second stop of the day.

Lakeland Wednesday 25th Jan
A couple of nice surprises here with a couple of executive Boeing 737-200s, “one unidentified” and an ex Mosquito control Douglas C-47 Dakota, which had arrived for the Florida Air Museum 12 months ago. If im honest though not much else here apart from a Piper jet, a weird looking Cirrus and a smart Grumman G-44 Widgeon in the museum!! Never the less worth the visit as it was on the way.

Next planned stop was Kissimmee but Polk city (Fantasy of Flight), which is rite on the I-4. Had to be visited as it would be rude not to pop in to work the Starliner!!

Not a great deal here apart from the Starliner and a Catalina, but missed the Dakota which is on the side of the I-4 road before the turn off for the museum heading from Tampa to Orlando.

Kissimmee Wednesday 25th Jan
This was the first disappointment of the trip, and if im honest was the start of how things were going to pan out as we headed round some of the bigger fields in Florida regarding shooting executive aircraft!! we had a few requests for a look round the ramps/hangers turned down, even Skyway who operated the Shorts SH360s and Learjet 23/24s on mail/cargo flights turned us away, which again was frustrating as the Sheds were parked really awkwardly for shots and all the Learjet’s were in the hanger! Most FBO’s don’t like executive aircraft being shot these days, or the reg in the picture at the least!!!! Which for me I’d rather not take if im honest, as sometimes it makes the shot?
One tasty surprise here though was a classic helicopter in the shape of a Sikorsky S58!! Remember these in Teesside in the late 70s belonging to Bristow’s, operating to the oil rigs off the north east coast!

So after a very disappointing visit shooting what we could from the fence it was off to our last stop of the day! Orlando International!

Orlando International Wednesday 25th Jan
We didn’t get as much time here as we would have liked as it was getting dark by the time we had done the FBO’s and perimiter to shoot the stored Boeing 727s and three BAC 1-11s!!!! Not many places you can see three of these beasts together at one airport now! Two of which looked airworthy but the third defiantly wasn’t going anywhere!!
Again though no luck at the FBO’s with regards to access and not much on show at the Cessna Service Centre with only a couple of American examples on for a shot!
First we headed to the AirTran maintenance area where the Stored Boeing 727s are and the long term resident BAC 1-11 used as a fire trainer is. It hasn’t deprecated much, although there was two on my last visit over 10 years ago and both in US Air colors.

Once it got dark we had a couple of things we needed to do! Craig had his orders from his daughter to visit a local shopping mall for some clothes for her and I had to visit a mate of a mate who lived out there to collect some Lizard food to bring back home for him. We then had a couple of Buds and had a little bit of banter with the Americans about their petrol prices going up etc! We had to leave after an hour or so as we still didn’t have a hotel booked and it was getting late, so we headed off to look for digs near to Orlando Executive which was our first stop tomorrow morning!

Sanford had some tasty Airliners in for scrapping/respray maintenance etc., although really awkward for shots, but again no luck in getting airside to shoot them, so it was a quick blast round the perimeter and off to De Land, our next stop.

De Land Thursday 26th Jan
De Land is well worth a visit as it’s one of the main skydive Centre’s in Orlando, so plenty of parachute aircraft, a classic Skyvan, couple of nice old Biz jets stored and even a British Airways Ce172!!! Which certainly excited Hamish!!!!!!!

Daytona Thursday 26th Jan
We didn’t have much luck at Daytona with regards to the two aircraft we wanted to shoot there! The Convair “which is near the ATC” was being moved as we arrived, but we got pulled by a security guard as we waited for it to be parked up! And we missed the remains of the FK27 as we left the area also!! We did manage to get in a couple of FBOs hanger/ramps which brightened the mood as we left after another disappointing visit!

Worth a quick pop in to work the Dakota, not much else in here apart from what can only be described as a very chilled out Beast!!! Hairy alligator with long legs!! Glad it was friendly though as I don’t think I’d be here writing this if it wasn’t!!! NICE DOGGY!!!

Titusville TICO Thursday 26th Jan
Again this was a place where not much was expected to be seen, but it’s always worthwhile popping into some of the smaller airfields in Florida as you might get a nice surprise.
Got a tour round the Bristow’s facility just as it was getting dark, so after a rather nice tour we then headed off to Melbourne for the night.

Didn’t even bother to get my camera out! Was tempted to shoot one of about 40 stored UH1s, but the main reason to visit here was to shoot the stored Boeing 707 that’s round near ATC, was told I needed steps by Kev Perry (from his trip here a couple of years ago) and at that point of the trip didn’t have a pair, but we were being followed by the local trooper at this point so decided to head off, after all this is a J-stars/Northrop facility when all said and done!!!

Ft Pierce 27th January
Had a tour booked here with Missionary Flights and their CEO Dick Snook. He showed us round the four immaculate Dakotas, Two of which are turbine powered, and then out along the ramp, where we got sight of the first true classic Biz jet on the trip!! A Jetstar!! “Oh Baby!!!!!” no engines but looking immaculate in what looked like a new paint scheme, next on the ramp was another classic, A Heron and a couple of Classic Gulfs!! This is what I remember Florida to be like!!! Tasty!!
Anyway after saying thanks and our goodbyes to Mr. Snook, we headed off for the short trip south to Stewart Whitham

Stewart Witham Field Friday 27th Jan
This is a tasty field for Biz, but very frustrating for the photographer now. Fences up so no more wandering round the ramps! We did managed however to get out through the main FBO here, only because we asked to shoot the Dakota,” but again” we were asked no pics of any of the biz while out on the ramp!!!!!! To be honest it was full of NetJets so wasn’t bothered about not working them. But nice to shoot the Dakota which was in old American Airlines Colors and apparently is the oldest Dakota flying???

West Palm Beech Friday 27th Jan
This airport amazes me in the amount of biz you get here! Unbelievable amount of movements are executive aircraft! Shame really as we got here just as it was getting dark, so just rushed round the perimeter and tried to work what we could from the fence! Then watched the constant stream of Biz-jet arrivals for the regular Friday evening invasion!!

Boca Raton Friday 27th Jan
If im honest didn’t even expect to get the camera out here as it was dark, and it’s a nightmare trying to get shots at the best of times!! Always full of Biz jets though and frustrating as hell! Anyway I knocked on a door and we had a result in that the guy would take us out to shoot the Westwind and the MU2 “but no regs!!!!!!” anyway as we walked back into the hanger the Venezuelan Learjet 25 was sat there begging to be worked so asked the question and he said “yeah no probs!!!!!” Even with reg in shot!!

((Day 5))
FT Lauderdale Saturday 28th Jan
We had planned on having the full Saturday here as it was Canadian day, so hoping to get some of the hybrid sunwing charters in odd ball colors! Anyway we headed up to the spectators area on the car park as they were landing on 27R, good shots from here with the cruise ships in the background but it didn’t last long as they switched to 09L a couple of hours later, so we then headed down to the designated area at 09L for spotters. Good area as you can keep out of the heat in the comfort of your car and listen to the ATC speaker which is on the fence, the holes now have gone though in the fence so you need a pair of steps to get over for shots, I had no probs with the local police as they passed me several times while I was hanging off them working stuff as they passed by for classic wide angle shots. Later we headed round the perimeter asking the question at some of the FBO’s, and struck lucky with one where the two Beagle 206s were, but no shots of Biz “AGAIN” two nice old HS125-400s and a Westwind were sat next to the Beagles; got a sneaky shot of the Westwind as we walked out but missed the classic 125s!

FT Lauderdale Executive Sunday 29th Jan
Another Frustrating Airport for the photographer, FT Lauderdale EX is incredible to say the least for the amount of exotic aircraft you get there! But again only a couple of FBOs let us out, one though was probably the best to get access with as it was a Sabre maintenance facitly with several on its ramp and three in their hanger!!! Tasty!! So after asking a couple of dodgy looking gangster characters who were working on a car outside the FBO, we got access to the ramp and hanger, so a special thanks goes out to 50% and Xzibit look alikes for their time!!

Opa Locka Sunday 29th Jan
Well nothing can describe this place! It’s got everything for the Civil enthusiast and what a way to start!! N88ZL Boeing 707 sat there as we approached from the north!!! Hope this classic doesn’t go the same as the majority of stored airliners here as its been parked for 2 months now?? Still looking smart, this particular aircraft “I’m sure” was the last 707 to visit Teesside back in 2002 when it had visited several times! Anyway unfortunately the light was dull when we arrived so we just worked what we could knowing we would be back hopefully in better light conditions.

I would definitely recommend emailing this place if you’re visiting, as the Airport manager told us he will organize ramp tours if you mail in advance so he can get staff to cover. Something we didn’t do but will do next time!!

Miami Monday 30th Jan
Another Boeing 707 was at Miami in the shape of Congolese Government 9Q-CLK. After getting a contacts number from Kev Perry, I started ringing and trying to get some sort of airside access to hopefully work this beast, it looked promising at first but in the end it didn’t happen, so really gutted as this aircraft is a true classic in that it’s a 138B, probably only a couple left airworthy now, John Travolta’s is the other. Anyway it’s been painted now in the Dreamliner colors and looks real tasty. Having done a test flight in May last year it had two engines removed and now sits waiting for them to be fitted again after tests!

The plan for today was for Hamish to hire a Cessna 172 and fly down to Key West for us to shoot the ex Cubana Antonov AN26, but the weather was a bit windy so he decided to go up and have a couple of hours flying about including several circuits at Tamiami, So while he got some hours in I had a wonder round the ramps and worked some of the more interesting stuff Tamiami had to offer.

Just before dark we decided to have a last blast round the perimeter to see if we could work the Congolese Boeing 707 and the Dreamlifter, no luck with the 707 but the Dreamlifter was possible as we headed into some building site just after the workers had left!! We drove over some rough ground and worked the beast just as the security guard of the site was heading over to chase us!! Close one!! Not the best of shots as it was dark and a lot of clutter! But worth the effort, “Just!”

We were both heading home with KLM, This particular Flight back was booked as it’s an MD11 and I haven’t had the chance to fly in one of these now rare passenger aircraft. PH-KCD was the ride back, and I must say in comfort in just over 8hours! Probably one of the smoothest flights I’ve had over the pond!
In a nut shell though really gutted about missing the Boeing 707-138B 9Q-CLK as it was the main reason for the trip, but what made matters worse and certainly rubbed salt in the wounds, was we rotated right beside it as we departed from 09L!!!! “Devastated”

((Day 10))
Amsterdam 2nd Feb After a couple of hours walking the piers in the terminal, Craig and I decided to head to our gates for our flights back to EDI & DTV. PH-OFO Fokker FK100 was my ride and operating (KLM1537)

DTV 2nd Feb
After a nice smooth flight it was back to Gods country and DTV! Nothing of interest in at DTV but nice to be back home, Where the weather was a cool -2!!
