Dusseldorf  8th & 9th April  2008     Chris Hall

Taking advantage of a Jet2 offer from Leeds, I booked for 24 hours in Dusseldorf, for the princely sum of £50.00.  The flight arrives in and leaves Dusseldorf in the evening so an overnight hotel is needed, and I managed to get a room at the Mercure in Ratingen for £30.00.  The hotel is about 10 minutes by shuttle from the airport but there are a couple of alternatives adjacent to the terminal (Sheraton and Maritim), but these would be much more expensive.

On the way to Leeds I stopped in at Teesside for Lear Jet 60 HB-VOR and Citation 560 G-OSVM.

Only the usual suspects at Leeds:

My flight LS347 (G-CELG) left Leeds at 1810 and exactly one hour later touched down on runway 23R at Dusseldorf.  A smooth flight, which took us right over Schiphol as we began our descent.  The observation deck on top of Pier B is open until 9pm so I made a dash up there for the last few minutes of light to get what was in before leaving for the hotel.  To get to the observation deck follow signs for Besucherterasse in the B section, departures level.  There are two escalators before passing through a long line of travel agencies.  The cash desk for the deck is just beyond this area – pay your EUR2.20 and your ticket is valid for both decks.

Logs for Dusseldorf don’t include the Lufthansa mainline fleet as I only need a few widebodies, which don’t use DUS.  Also, I didn’t log every German aircraft but you will see many Eurowings / Lufthansa Regional CRJs and 146s.

Wednesday morning I was back at the airport for 6.30am (observation deck on pier B opens at 6am).  After a quick breakfast under the golden arches I went up to the observation deck and waited for blue skies and sunshine.  It was a long wait!  Runways 05L/R were in use till mid morning, at which time I took the Sky Train to the airport railway station where there is another super observation deck overlooking the taxiway and the 23L/R thresholds.  This deck also looks across the LTU apron.

Operations changed back to 05L/R mid-afternoon so it was back to the pier B deck for the remainder of my stay.  The rain came just as I left the deck to check-in for my flight back to Leeds.
