The Fishburn Historic Aviation Centre

The Aircraft Restoration Group is led by Mike Eastman and they hope to establish the Fishburn Historic Aviation Centre and build three hangars to house their aircraft collection. All enquiries and offers of help or support in cash or kind to Mike at; ARG@aircraftmail.com

Both the Dove and Venom arrived on the 2 February 2016 and are on loan from the de Havilland Aircraft Museum at London Colney with the Primary glider being acquired from the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum in 2015 and arriving at Fishburn in late February 2016. The ARG have several other aircraft which are currently in store elsewhere and will not be moved to Fishburn until the hangar(s) are erected to provide some protection from the weather. These include Flea G-ADRZ, the unique Thurston Tawney Owl G-APWU, Spitfire FSM BR954/JP-A, Sea Vampire T22 XG743/BY/798 and an as yet unidentified Oxford Mk1! The group website is currently under re-build but like most groups these days they also have a Facebook page;

Fishburn News 30th December 2018 - David Thompson

My last visit of 2018 and most of the movements had been and gone by lunchtime and before I arrived but it was nice to see the new resident RV-6 G-RVDJ out in the late winter sun. Originally built and based at Beeches Farm at Cliffe near Selby the RV was bought by it’s present owners in late 2017 and took up temporary residency at Rectory Farm Airfield near Newark before moving up to Fishburn in May were it has managed to elude me to date!

Thanks as ever to Beryl Morgan and her family for the continued access to the airfield and I hope that normal service will be resumed in 2019. Happy New Year!

A new professionally produced Fishburn Airfield website has just gone live and can be found at; http://www.fishburnairfield.co.uk/  There is also a Facebook page, link here; https://www.facebook.com/fishburnair/ and the Aviator Bistro too which continues to offer meal deals for visiting pilots; https://www.facebook.com/theaviatorbistro/

Fishburn News 23rd November 2018 - David Thompson

My first visit in two months and I’ve picked a poor day with the miserable weather keeping everyone on the ground. Everyone that is except for Peter Harle in his newish Tecnam P2010 G-DLMH which replaces his previous mount, Tecnam P2008 G-HRLE. New resident Skyranger G-CCDY has moved in from Baxby while Team Minimax G-MYYS has moved out to somewhere up north and has been replaced by Rans S6-ESD, G-MYLO which arrived in mid-September.

There are quite a few airframes on maintenance or construction which in the latter category include long term rebuild C152 G-BIDH which was badly damaged when it hit the windsock pole on landing at Linley Hill on the 27 August 2017 so perhaps re-construction rather than construction!  Firmly in the construction camp is Jim Edgeworth’s Glasair Sportsman which continues to make progress with the fuselage substantially complete minus internal fittings, the wings are complete and engine has been mounted and plumbed in and all standing on it’s undercarriage. The two Jodel’s are progressing slowly, both needing carpentry and fabric work to get them airworthy again while the EV-97 awaits it’s turn, again.

The Aircraft Restoration Group continue to work minor miracles with a limited and at times no budget, led by Mike Eastman and his team of volunteers including John Burns co-owner of the above mentioned Rans G-MYLO. The Sea Vampire emerged from long term storage near Masham in North Yorkshire and arrived at Fishy rather unceremoniously on the 3 July when the unloading hi-ab operator brought the wings into contact with the ground at a faster than expected speed! The majority of the restoration work was undertaken in a gazebo, yes – honestly, a gazebo, I told you they had a limited budget, in the back field well away from prying eyes. The bare pod was quickly primed to offer some protection against the elements and the wings fitted to offer some stability whilst the rest of the airframe was put together with help and advice from Mike who as well as having a ‘dicky ticker’ also broke his leg in the name of, well progress. Both the Sea Vampire and Venom are now stood on the overflow car park behind the Aviator Bistro and will be joined next year by the Dove if it can be extricated from its current home wedged between the bistro and the avgas tank without too many problems or broken bones!

The SE5a is a 1/5 scale model owned by Mike Eastman.

The Skyranger 912 is ex-Baxby and the Tecnam P2010 replaces Tecnam P2008-JC G-HRLE which was w/o here on the 19 April.

No photo as yet but Rans S6-ESD, G-MYLO is new here and first noted in mid-September and replaces Team Minimax G-MYYS which has been sold and moved north.

Sea Vampire T22 XG743/798/BY, arrived 3 July 2018 from storage in the Masham area and Venom FB54 J-1790 – now both relocated behind the clubhouse.

Fishburn Trip Report 19th April 2018 - David Thompson

Phew what a scorcher! The BBC, ITV, Sky and even the Daily Mail reported this to be the hottest April day in almost 70 years with temperatures well into the higher twenties, even at Fishburn Airfield! It was hot but the ground remained soggy with the runway still officially closed due to water-logging especially on the slope and down towards the 26 threshold. The closed notice didn’t stop regular visitor Jabiru G-CDCP from making one of his regular hops down from Eshott and the Swift arrived in the early afternoon after having some difficulty in finding the field but with a change in the wind, what there was of it, to a headwind and having a long journey back across the Pennines to Ashcroft in Cheshire his stay was short lived!

As I arrived temporary resident ‘EN was preparing to leave for a two week stay at Newtonards in Northern Ireland and with full tanks he was planning to route via Kirkbride or if reported coastal fog persisted then north again to Prestwick and then across the Irish Sea. The Swift should return on the 10 May as one of the Cheshire Flyers on their ‘fly-out’ to Orkney calling at Fishburn, East Fortune and then Perth as they make their way north or if the weather is poor then it’s Plan B and east to Glen Forsa on Mull!

A possible future resident is Tiger Moth II G-ALBD/T7748 which is presently undergoing a restoration back to flying condition in the workshops of the late Ron Souch at Aero Antiques based at Hall Farm near Southampton. The aircraft has something of a recent chequered history after being written off in Belgium in 1981 and then being moved into storage in the Netherlands and then to France for restoration before moving to the UK and a Fishburn based pilot has a share in the Tiger Moth as well as also having a Pietenpol project too and both would make nice additions to the Fishburn residents list!

Fishburn Trip Report
26th March 2018 - David Thompson

Yesterday and today have been the best two days of flying for many weeks and although the strip remains very damp those who can are using the 08 end to get some much needed air under their wings to remind themselves what the airfield looks like from above rather than from out of the Café windows! Mention of which, there is now a new tenant in the Aviator Café and it should be fully open again before too long. Hopefully!

The Sportsmans wings have been removed again for the fuel tanks to be fitted, two in each wing, inboard and outboard whilst the wings of the Sonex have been painted in a colour which adorned many, still does?, Ford RS cars back in the day and which is described as ‘Electric Orange’, paint code 6FSE. You’ll have to wait! The Acrosport was visiting from it’s home base at Maypole Airfield near Herne Bay in Kent and arrived as a potential buyer for Speed Wing ‘LL which is for sale to make room for the owners Sportsman which is making steady progress but with hangar space at a premium, it has to go!

I noticed a link on the Fishburn Airfield Facebook page which was posted by Neil McCarthy on the 21 march which led me to this; XXX using PA-32 Cherokee Six G-EDYO with a CoO effective from the 12 January with the company being formed the previous month on the 11 December. From FR24 ‘YO looks to have flown up from Alderney to Bournemouth on the 6 January and then north on the 14 January and from their Facebook page a stop at Old Sarum en-route. Website here; http://blueyonderairtours.com/ and the now obligatory Facebook page too.

Due to the condition of the Fishburn strip and the need to operate at heavy loads ‘YO left Fishburn for Peterlee on the 25 March for what may become a temporary home until conditions at Fishburn improve although it’s return is as yet, far from certain?

Not seen by me but confirmed by it’s new owner is new resident Pioneer 300 G-EWES with a CofA effective from the 14 February. A former long time resident at Ewesley Park the Pioneer suffered a runway excursion at the Charlton Mires airstrip north of Alnwick in Northumberland on the 31 May 2011 and it’s PTF expired on the 1 November 2017 but I am unsure as to the aeroplanes current condition. Interestingly one of it’s previous owner has just registered Spacek SD-1 Minisport G-CKWG and obviously a replacement for ‘ES.

Fishburn Trip Report 14th March 2018 - David Thompson

A very quiet day with the strip in a poor state due to the recent wet weather but on the bright side confirmation of the departure before Christmas of the fuselage of F172N Skyhawk G-NIUS which has gone to an unknown location for conversion into a flight sim! The Foxbat has a brake problem and the much modified Monofly has not flown for months and could be for sale ‘if the right offer came along’ as it continues to sit in the corner of the hangar gathering dust. The Sonex has been stripped back to bare metal for priming and a re-spray and the instrumentation removed for up-grading.

My post-Japan visit and a bit of catching up to do with yet another former Bagby resident in the shape of Saratoga OO-RAG arriving on the 25 February from it’s new base at Teesside for some maintenance work which should see it depart wearing it’s original UK registration of G-WILI which it wore prior to it’s sale in Belgium in 1995. The registration is a nod to it’s former owner the now retired British Champion Jockey Willie Carson.

The Club is here for the winter due to the poor surface of it’s own farm strip at West Rainton near Sunderland and should only be a temporary resident. Should? The Hull Aero Club C152 ‘DH is the unfortunate aircraft which struck it’s home fields windsock during a landing excursion on the 27 August 2017 and currently lies dismantled pending some extensive cosmetic surgery! Also undergoing some extensive, this time self-inflicted, cosmetic surgery is the Sonex which has been stripped down to bare metal and is currently being sprayed with primer before being completely rebuilt.

Recently completed RV-9 ‘PL made it’s maiden flight on the 26 March in the hands of Paul Johnson who completed several high speed ground runs before taking-off on a 24 minute test flight, with a sub 100 metre roll aided by a 10 Knot headwind!, and was very pleased with aircrafts performance and which is now in limbo awaiting LAA clearance to continue having run out of time due to the poor winter weather and the poor state of the Fishburn runway.

Nothing too romantic about this visit on St Valentine’s Day just the chance of a pre-Japan visit to check on any local movements which of course given the poor weather of late, there were none! The Sportsman is making good progress with the wings now attached to the fuselage and internal fitting of the fuselage is also underway too. The Sonex is heading the other way and is being dismantled to be rebuilt with a new avionics kit and colour scheme with the latter sure to make it standout in a crowd, or even well away from one too! The Cessna arrived from Bagby on the 26 January and as last year is here for hours building hire and to escape the winter quagmire of it’s usual home base. Another former Bagby resident and now short lived Fishburn resident Emeraude G-AYTR has been sold to new owners and will be based at Eshott to continue it’s north eastern Sojourn.

Fishburn News 14th January 2018 - David Thompson

My first visit of the New Year and the weather conditions were less than ideal for flying with a cold wind and carpet of cloud above the airfield which kept most people either tinkering in their hangars or drinking tea in the clubhouse. A new year but nothing changes at Fishburn! Well not quite as there is talk of the Aviator Café opening up again under new management and the mortal remains of F172N Skyhawk G-NIUS have disappeared and I know not where to?
